The first day of the Women’s College World Series delivered despite Mother Nature’s best efforts, and Day 2 brought the first eliminations. Now, it’s on to Day 3, and there are more elimination games on the horizon.

Two elimination games were played Thursday as Alabama took on Stanford and Oklahoma State squared off against Utah. The Crimson Tide’s matchup against the Cardinal garnered plenty of attention, though, as Montana Fouts got the start in the circle. She’s been dealing with a hyperextended knee and head coach Patrick Murphy has said he’d use the star pitcher if the situation called for it.

Although the nation’s leader in strikeouts was back in a starting role, Stanford rose to the occasion amid the pitcher’s duel. Sydney Steele had both RBI — including a solo home run in the top of the seventh — to lift the Cardinal past Alabama, knocking Fouts and the Crimson Tide out of the tournament field.

Shortly after, Oklahoma State and Utah squared off in the nightcap. The Utes had an interesting road to the game against the Cowgirls, though, as their game against Washington got pushed back to Friday due to a lengthy rain delay Thursday night.

That made for a quick turnaround entering the nightcap, and Oklahoma State didn’t make it easy as the Cowgirls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. They didn’t slow down, eventually taking an 8-0 lead in the second inning en route to the run-rule victory to advance and avenge their 8-0 loss in their previous outing.
