Urban Meyer weighs in on College Football Playoff rankings, whether committee got it right

Urban Meyer on first CFP Ranking Release | Ohio State at No. 1

The first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings debuted on Tuesday night and Ohio State checked in as the nation’s top-ranked team.

That came as no surprise to former Buckeyes coach and current FOX Sports analyst Urban Meyer, who said the CFP selection committee absolutely got it right.

“I think they considered Ohio State has by far the best resume in college football, so I think they got it right,” Meyer said on Urban’s Take with Tim May. “Now as teams play harder; like the Wolverines haven’t played (anybody). When you look at their schedule they haven’t played a third quarter, but they’re playing like a top team. So that all is going to come to a head soon.”

The Big Ten does indeed figure to work itself out one way or another. Michigan still has to play both Penn State and Ohio State, while the Buckeyes have already taken care of the Nittany Lions.

But there was intrigue for Meyer well beyond the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings.

He was more interested in a pair of teams that checked in at No. 6 and No. 7. Those teams, Meyer believes, are teams to be taken very seriously in the playoff race, because they certainly look the part.

“On tape, I’m saying Oregon, when I watch tape as a coach, I’m saying Oregon and Texas,” Meyer said. “Now Texas Quinn Ewers is out. I know they have losses, but just purely watching video tape it’s hard to say that Oregon and Texas are not two of the best teams in the country. But that’ll come. That’s all going to be coming to a head here in the next month.”

Oregon will get a chance to prove itself by showing it’s the best team out west, despite the narrow loss to Washington earlier this season. The Ducks can accomplish that by getting to the Pac-12 title game and winning.

Texas’ path through the College Football Playoff rankings is similar, though perhaps a bit more complicated.

With one loss already, Texas needs to win out and take care of business in the Big 12 title game. With an injury at quarterback, though, that gets tougher.

Meyer will be at Texas’ game this weekend as part of his duties with FOX, and he chimed in on what he’ll be looking at.

“As we’re getting ready for the game I watched them, and there is a dropoff,” Meyer said. “This quarterback, fundamentally has got forever to go, but you can tell he’s a great talent. Quinn Ewers is an established quarterback. He went in and beat Alabama at Tuscaloosa.”
