After a disappointing 5-5 season in 2020, off-field allegations and a disappointing season-opening upset loss to UCLA, there is speculation that the 2021 season will be Ed Orgeron’s last as the head coach at LSU. Due to his ties to the program, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher has been speculated to return to LSU for years.

In 2004, Fisher, who was the offensive coordinator at LSU from 2001-2006, was one of six candidates LSU interviewed to replace Nick Saban, who left for the Dolphins. In 2015, with speculation surrounding Les Miles future in Baton Rouge, Fisher, who was the head coach at Florida State at the time, was speculated as the leading candidate. When Les Miles was fired in 2016, Fisher’s name came up once again.

Jimbo Fisher eventually left Florida State for Texas A&M in 2018, signing ten-year, $75 million contract to lead the Aggies.

Now, with speculation surrounding Orgeron’s future, Jimbo Fisher will not be in consideration for the LSU head coaching job, should the role come open after the season, reports Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman.

“Should LSU come open after this season Jimbo Fisher will not be a part of that equation for the Tigers,” Zwerneman said. “Jimbo & Courtney Fisher are quite happy in Bryan-College Station, and that won’t change any time soon. Texas A&M is really good about meeting Jimbo’s requests, understandably.”

In the last three seasons, Fisher has led Texas A&M to a 26-10 record with victories in the Orange Bowl, Texas Bowl and Gator Bowl.

Jimbo Fisher’s contract extension

Jimbo Fisher recently earned a new extension and raise at Texas A&M.

Fisher’s new contract extends him through 2031. Fisher will earn an annual salary of $9,000,000 starting on January 1, 2022 and will increase to $9,150,000 on January 1, 2023. In each of the following years, the base salary increases by $100,000 on January 1.

Jimbo Fisher released a statement following the extension.

“The investment Texas A&M University is making in our program, coaching staff and facilities speaks to the vision of our leadership and their commitment to long-term success,” Fisher stated. “I am thankful for the unwavering support of the administration, the faculty and staff, our 12th Man Foundation donors, the Aggie Network, and the 12th Man – the largest and loudest student section in the country. It is an honor to be the Head Football Coach at Texas A&M, and although I am proud of the strides we’ve made, we ain’t done yet!”
