The Buffalo Bills entered the 2023 season with high expectations yet again, and once again, came up short, falling 27-24 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round Sunday. 



And when expectations don’t get met, the head coach shoulders a lot of the blame. Sean McDermott has done just that and with Buffalo’s season officially over, questions are being raised concerning McDermott’s job status. 



Making an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN addressed McDermott’s future with the Bills and if the organization could make a surprise move to part ways with the 49-year-old. 



“I think whenever any of these good teams lose, this question comes up,” Schefter said. “It came up in Dallas, it came up in Philadelphia, you’re raising it here about Buffalo. They have stood squarely behind Sean McDermott at times when people thought they could be making a change. There was the article from Ty Dunne earlier this year with his comments related to 9/11 that were obviously hard to describe, hard to stomach. 



“There were people at that time that thought they could make a change that week and they didn’t. They never vacillated. They stood right behind him the entire time. So, when they lose a game like this at home, in a year where there are so many factors, I’m sure there are going to be people out there asking that question.”

McDermott is seven years into his tenure with the Bills, a highly successful tenure at that. The Bills have gone 73-41 under McDermott, making the playoffs in six-of-seven seasons. But though Buffalo has carried one of the league’s most talented rosters, they’ve advanced to the AFC Championship Game just once. They’ve lost in the Divisional Round in three consecutive seasons. 



Their latest loss was perhaps the hardest to stomach, as kicker <a href="https://www.on3.com/db/tyler-bass-117327/">Tyler Bass</a>‘ 44-yard would-be game tying field goal went wide right with 1:43 remaining in the game to secure the victory for Kansas City. 



“It’s extremely disappointing and frustrating,” McDermott said. “It’s a type of situation in our business where you’ve got to spend the whole offseason thinking about it. But it drives you harder — if that’s even possible to drive someone harder — drives you harder to come back next season and continue to work at it.



“Listen: There’s only one team at the end of all this that’s happy.”
