Aidan Hutchinson contract extension: Financial details emerge on new deal for Detroit Lions star

On Wednesday, the Detroit Lions and Aidan Hutchinson agreed to a massive extension, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Hutchinson missed most of the 2024 season due to an injury, but he hasn’t missed a beat since returning.

Now, he’ll be paid handsomely for his performance. The terms of the deal are reportedly four-years, $180 million, and that incudes $141 million guaranteed, per Hutchinson’s agent via ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Lions will agree it’s worth it, as Hutchinson is off to a flying start this year, already putting up great numbers through seven games. He has 16 tackles and six tackles for a loss, also forcing four fumbles.

But what the Lions really pay Hutchinson for is getting to the quarterback. Six sacks are exactly the kind of production they want to this point of the season. They will now be hoping the number gets into the double digits for the second time in his career.

Now, all focus can be on what’s taking place on the field. Detroit goes into Sunday with an important divisional matchup in front of them, facing the Minnesota Vikings. There might be a little bittersweetness to any sacks recorded in this one, going after college teammate JJ McCarthy.

A lot more will be coming than just one game, though. The Lions have their guy for the foreseeable future, securing a top pass rusher in the NFL.

Detroit took Hutchinson with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Born in the Mitten State and playing for the Michigan Wolverines, the initial thought was that he would not be available when the Lions got on the clock. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to take Georgia‘s Travon Walker with the top pick, allowing a homecoming between the two.

Since then, it’s been a great success. Hutchinson already holds 34.5 career sacks in 46 games played. If not for the injury last season, the number would be significantly higher. He maybe would have been able to play at a Defensive Player of the Year level, getting 7.5 sacks through five games.

Plenty of pass rushers saw big checks come their way this offseason. Among those are Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons, and TJ Watt. Everyone knew Hutchinson was going to be the next one, finally getting the extension done on Wednesday morning.
