Corey Day speaks out after violent wreck in Hangtown 100 at Placerville

Last night during the Hangtown 100, Corey Day had a scary wreck as he got into a lapped car early in the race from P2. Next year, Day will embark on his first full-time season in NASCAR. For now, he’s getting in laps on the dirt.
Hendrick Motorsports had two drivers in the Hangtown 100 at Placerville. Both of them ended up flipping before the race was over. Corey Day took his tumble first, getting around lapped traffic. Then, Kyle Larson was wrecked from the lead.
At first, it looked like we were going to get a Larson vs. Day battle. That was over with 42 laps to go as Day flipped into the air in a violent wreck.
Corey Day is okay, according to reports from the track. That was a nasty hit, and you can’t help but flinch as he continues to flip over and over again. Day also posted on social media today.
“Thank you to everyone that has checked on me after last night,” Day posted online. “Thank you to [Arai Americas, Simpson Racing, Ultra Shield, and Placerville Speedway] safety crew for keeping me safe last night. Pretty banged up but overall ok. See you guys this week, [Factory Kahne] and I have some unfinished business.”
A tough crash for a young driver. Corey Day is racing full-time next season in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. He will pilot the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy all season long.

Corey Day, Kyle Larson flip at Placerville
While it is smart for team owners to let NASCAR drivers race on dirt, there are moments you question it. Kyle Larson and Corey Day are made from the same mold. Larson is the one who vouched for Day’s talents and guided him to a deal with Hendrick Motorsports. To see your current star and champion, and your future star, both flip in the same race is tough.
Jeff Gordon and Rick Hendrick have allowed their drivers to race outside of NASCAR. Other teams and drivers refrain from racing on dirt. We have seen Joe Gibbs lift that ban on his drivers recently. That has been great for Christopher Bell and Ty Gibbs.
Kyle Larson was flipped by Daison Pursley while the two raced for the lead. With five laps to go, Larson was sent off the track as he flipped. Pursley went on to take the win in the Hangtown 100.
Thankfully, it appears that Larson and Day are fine. They will be racing again soon enough, you can bet on that.
