Early in this NASCAR Truck Series race at Kansas, we have seen contact. Dawson Sutton eventually brought out the caution. After reviewing the evidence, NASCAR officials then penalized Sutton by holding him for two laps.

According to officials, Dawson Sutton intentionally brought out the caution. Sutton took a slide into the entrance of pit road with a flat tire. He was able to get his truck retired right as the caution flag came out.

A wild and chaotic first five laps at Kansas. The Truck Series races go by quickly. A penalty like this early on, being held for two laps, is not going to help Sutton at all.

Dawson Sutton is young. He is still developing and learning. His family owns Rackley WAR, the team he races for. Sutton is also racing late models. Rackley has an alliance with Kevin Harvick to help develop drivers like Sutton in that program. It also allows Harvick’s son Keelan to get seat time in the late model cars.

Ty Majeski was also penalized early. Luke Baldwin, in the 66 truck, running part-time, is another teenage driver like Sutton who is learning. He had to serve a pass-through on pit road in the first stage as well.

The Truck Series is full of talent. It is also full of young, developing drivers. We are going to see these mistakes. Still, it is rare that you see this kind of penalty in the sport. Intentionally causing a caution – that’s two laps and more or less a day ender.

Dawson Sutton finding his footing

Last week at Texas, Dawson Sutton earned his second-ever top-10 finish in the Truck Series. He has had limited starts in ARCA and NASCAR action. However, Sutton has shown talent and skill in his limited starts. In eight races, he has only finished outside of the top-20 twice this season.

Coming off that strong run at Texas, today’s harsh penalty hurts even more. Sutton was likely hoping to get to pit road and change his tires so he could keep going. But bringing out that caution, how he allegedly did, means his night at Kansas will be a long one.

You never want to say never, but it is going to be difficult for Sutton to get back to the lead lap. We will need caution flags and a few lucky breaks to make it happen. Tonight would have been a great race to be in the thick of things. William Byron and Carson Hocevar came down from the Cup Series to mix it up with the Truck Series this weekend.

Tough break for Dawson Sutton. He will learn from this and bounce back. No big deal. For now, he has to focus on making the most out of his race at Kansas as he races multiple laps down to the leaders.
