Dylan Crews hits first MLB home run against New York Yankees

Dylan Crews was called up to the big leagues to play for the Washington Nationals on Monday. In his third game in the MLB, he hit his first career home run.
The solo shot to left field came on a 1-0 count against New York Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodon from the leadoff spot.
It’s more than a solid start for the former LSU Tigers star, who was selected No. 2 overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Before his call-up, Crews has been playing at Triple-A Rochester since June after starting the 2024 season at the Double-A level. During his time at Double-A and Triple-A this year Crews is hitting .272 with 21 doubles, 6 tiples, 13 home runs and 68 RBIs across 99 games.
His stellar career in Baton Rouge saw him hit .426 with a .567 on-base percentage in 2023, helping the Tigers win the national championship. Crews added 18 home runs, 70 RBIs and scored 100 runs. He was named the Golden Spikes Award winner for his efforts.
Crews was drafted one pick behind Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star pitcher Paul Skenes, his teammate at LSU. Their head coach in Baton Rouge Jay Johnson was in attendance for Crews’ MLB debut on Monday against the Yankees.

“It wasn’t hard,” Jay Johnson said of his decision to attend the game. “I was kind of trying to kick the tires a little bit last week. He had been playing so well. And it’s like, ‘Alright, I have to be able to fit this in and make sure we can get up here.’ So when I found out it was [Monday] it was perfect.”
Crews started in right field and batted second in the Nats lineup. While he didn’t record a hit during four plate appearances, he recorded a walk. On Tuesday, he was switched to seventh in the order where he went 2 of 4 with a run scored. To follow that up with a solo shot to begin the final game of the first series of his career is a strong statement to make early in his career.
As Crews and the Nats look to take the series against the Yankees on Wednesday, he’ll look to be a regular fixture to the Washington lineup for the rest of the regular season.
Next up for the Nationals is a series against the Chicago Cubs. They’re coming off a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates where they scored 41 total runs in three games against their division rival.
