Jerry Jones sounds off on Cowboys' 2025 season: 'We all underachieved'
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recognizes that his team should have accomplished more in 2025. While speaking to reporters after the Cowboys lost to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Jones was asked if he believed that the team underachieved this season.
“Absolutely. We all underachieved,” Jerry Jones said, per 105.3 The Fan. “The fact we’re not in the playoffs says that for you. …The question is, can we make some changes where we need to?”
On Saturday night, the Dallas Cowboys were eliminated from playoff contention after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders. The Eagles have clinched the NFC East, and the Cowboys have now missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
On Sunday, the Cowboys looked to get a win and give themselves a chance to finish the season with a winning record. But Sunday’s loss drops the Cowboys to 6-8-1 on the year, meaning their best final record can be 8-8-1.
Will Jerry Jones make the right changes in 2026?
As Jones mentioned, changes will likely be made during the offseason. One area of the team that will be examined is the defense, as the group struggled to find consistency throughout the year. When speaking to reporters, Jones was asked about defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus‘ future with the team.

“I might not couch it as difficult. (Evaluating him is) something we have to do,” Jones said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. Eberflus was hired in the offseason after he spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Eberflus’ defense did not meet expectations, but the group (and the entire Dallas community) took a major hit before the season began with the Cowboys traded All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Dallas brought in some key defensive players before the trade deadline (DL Quinnen Williams and LB Logan Wilson), but it still wasn’t enough to give the team a push to reach the playoffs.
With the Cowboys missing the playoffs, their Super Bowl drought continues. The last time they have reached the championship game was also the last time they won the title, which was in 1995. That was also the last time Dallas played in an NFC championship game.
