Training camp started this week for the Jets on Tuesday. However, on Thursday, New York may already have a significant injury to deal with coming out of its second practice, based on news this morning regarding QB Justin Fields.

Per reporting from camp by outlets like the New York Post and The Athletic, Fields was carted off with a leg injury he suffered during team drills. That’s after limping to the sideline and being checked on by the medical staff after a single play of 11-on-11. It has now been reported that Fields hurt his toe and the injury is not expected to be serious.

“Justin Fields was carted away on Thursday at Jets practice after limping off the field. Fields dropped to the ground after throwing an incompletion and then hopped to the sideline with a trainer nearby. He spent about 10 minutes on the trainer’s table with his shoe off and his lower leg getting examined,” wrote Ryan Dunleavy of the NYP. “Jets general manager Darren Mougey and a team doctor had a discussion as Fields deboarded the cart and walked gingerly into the locker room.”

With that, the Jets are already down their projected starter two days into camp. Tyrod Taylor has reportedly since taken over the reps for him with the team also having Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook on the depth chart.

This comes after what was apparently a good first day at training camp for Fields. ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote that Fields, “was solid in his first practice,” per his update coming out of Wednesday.

Fields is entering his first season with the Jets after signing with the franchise back in March. That’s after one year spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, after three with the Chicago Bears as a former first-round pick by them back in 2021.

In his career in the NFL, Fields has completed 61.1% of his throws for 7,780 yards, at just 155.6 passing yards per game, with 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He has also rushed for 2,509 yards, at 50.2 yards a game, and 19 touchdowns as well, with some success as a dual-threat. Most of that came as a starter while in Chicago, but Fields did make six starts with 10 appearances total for Pittsburgh last season before the return of Russell Wilson from a calf injury he also suffered while in training camp.

More is to come on how serious this injury may or may not be for Fields. Either way, though, it’s not an ideal start to camp for New York, especially if the Jets are without him for a notable amount of time with their preseason opening in just over two weeks and the season kicking off in a month and a half on September 7th against Fields’ former team in the Steelers.
