For the second time this Indianapolis 500 season, Kyle Larson has wrecked his IndyCar while practicing out on the track. Today is Fast Friday, the day when drivers get to put that little extra boost into the car that they will have for qualifying runs.

Kyle Larson was running his laps and all was fine. Then it wasn’t. Larson’s left side tires dipped too low on the narrow “apron” and eventually into the grass. It caused him to lose control and spin out.

Larson spun from the grass and into the outside wall. He hit the wall directly with the nose. His Arrow McLaren car might be somewhat salvageable. Watch it for yourself.

Kyle Larson was looked at in the infield care center and released. It seems that he is going to be fine. The first wreck he had at Indy this year was into the outside wall. Now, he’s gone too far to the inside. If anything, Larson has at least found the limits as far as that is concerned. But can he prevent himself from doing it again?

During his career, Larson has been known to overstep his car at times. Sprint cars on dirt, NASCAR stock cars on pavement – whatever it is. He has dug a little too deep and made mistakes. Sometimes he just flat out makes a mistake without pushing the limits.

Today, the field got the extra boost in horsepower. Larson has to adjust to that. He will have all of that power for qualifying. So, he has to be comfortable with whatever his car is doing on those single-car laps.

Kyle Larson has wrecked twice in IndyCar this season

Back in April, Kyle Larson had his first-ever wreck in an IndyCar. He had a clean sheet last year in his first-ever attempt at the Indianapolis 500. Considered to be the most versatile driver in North America and likely the world, Larson’s mistakes are a bit puzzling.

The thing is, his first wreck was when the cars were boosted, too. That extra horsepower is giving him issues, if these two wrecks are any evidence. But, let’s consider this for a second – could these wrecks be a byproduct of Larson being more comfortable in the car this year?

Last year, Larson may have been timid at times. It was his first-ever time in an IndyCar, not to mention racing one. So, he didn’t want to risk overstepping and making mistakes. In year two, perhaps that comfort level has risen to the point where he’s willing to overdrive the car or test out new things.

Kyle Larson is either going to take this and learn from it, or these two wrecks are a sign of things to come this year. There is a reason why only one man has finished all 1100 miles of the Double, and that man is Tony Stewart. It won’t be easy, but Larson can join him if all goes well next week.
