Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel addressed if he would consider benching QB Tua Tagovailoa after Monday’s loss. Safe to say, there’s a significant question at quarterback.

“The QB play last night was not good enough,” McDaniel said. “So everything is on the table.”

In the 28-15 loss to tjhe Pittsburgh Steelers, Tagovailoa was 22-of-28 for 253 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. On the surface, it’s not a bad stat line, but there has not been consistent play for the Dolphins this year as they dropped to 6-8 and out of the playoff race.

“I’m pretty disappointed in myself with how ready I got our receiving corps ready,” Tagovailoa said postgame. “I kind of felt like I let our guys down.

“We were messing ourselves up really. Just basically every aspect from my communication to the guys, with them getting in the huddle, calling the plays, getting out, guys knowing where to go with their alignments. All of that.”

This year, Tagovailoa has 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 67.7% completion percentage. Backup quarterback Quinn Ewers, a rookie out of Texas, is just five-of-eight passing for 53 yards in one game this year.

However, this is not the first time McDaniel has addressed a possible benching of Tagovailoa after he was pulled against the Browns in October. Ewers came in then.

“He is going to take the snaps this week, and he is going to be a starter this week, and my expectation is that we don’t throw 10 picks,” McDaniel said, via Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. McDaniel benched Tagovailoa with about eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Inserted under center was Ewers, who supplanted Zach Wilson as Miami’s backup.

“Definitely not happy, not proud of where I’m at with my play, with how I’ve gone about things this year,” Tagovailoa said at the time. “I know I have to be a lot better, and I’ve been better for the Miami Dolphins years past. But this isn’t years past, this is this year. Just trying to maneuver everything and trying to build a collection of guys to kind of bring along with me, and I have to be able to multitask if that makes sense.

“To be able to do that, while continuing to get whatever it was last year and the years prior for myself to get going again. And get in that flow.”
