NASCAR ratings revealed for Cup Series race at Richmond

The ratings for the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond have been revealed. Per Adam Stern of the Sports Business Journal, the USA Network earned a 0.75 rating and 1.4 million viewers for the race that took place on Saturday night. Stern noted that last year’s Richmond race earned a 1.2 rating and 2.2 million viewers.

One reason the race had bigger ratings last year is that it took place on a Sunday, and those days get bigger views than races on Saturday nights. Another factor that could have caused the lower ratings is that high school football likely began in different areas of the country, which means that people were attending games instead of being at home.

Despite not being a ratings hit, the Richmond race was enjoyed by the fans who did watch it. Jeff Gluck of The Athletic created a poll and asked, “Was Richmond a good race?” 83.1 percent of the over 23,000 fans who voted said yes.

Austin Dillon got redemption at NASCAR’s Richmond race

Austin Dillon won the Richmond race to clinch a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. It was redemption for Dillon, as he won the race at Richmond last year, but NASCAR did not allow him to compete in the playoffs because he was penalized for aggressive driving.

During his post-race press conference, Dillon was asked if he came into this year’s race angry for what happened last year. “I’m too tired to be angry,” he said. “I mean, I got a little cold, a broken rib, a lot of adversity. Man, some things you don’t understand at the time. Come back around. God has a way of putting that timing together. I feel like I was probably the calmest I’ve ever been tonight in the car winning the race. I didn’t act a certain way. I was just thankful for the opportunity.

“It was just a timing thing. If you would have told me we would come back a year later and sitting in Victory Lane after all we went through, man, we went through that and I, like, cried in our appeal process because that win meant a lot to me to be able to race with Denny[Hamlin] and Joey [Logano].
