Netflix announces John Elway documentary to be released in December
Netflix has released the official release date and trailer for the documentary about NFL legend John Elway. On Thursday, the streaming service announced that Elway will premiere on Monday, Dec. 22. It also shared the trailer that showed interviews from John Elway, his former coach, Mike Shanahan, his former teammate and legendary tight end Shannon Sharpe, and ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
“Told in his own words, the definitive story of Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway goes deep on his NFL dreams, heartbreaks, and Super Bowl redemption,” the official synopsis states. Netflix announced in December of last year that an Elway documentary is in the works. Peyton Manning‘s Omaha Productions produced the film, and Ken Rodgers is the director.
“John Elway’s career isn’t just iconic, it’s darn near mythological,” Rodgers told Netflix last year. “His physical abilities, mental toughness, and raw determination are the stuff of legend.”
Along with Omaha Productions, Elway was produced by Jason Reed for Skydance Sports, Angus Wall, Terry Leonard, and Kent Kubena for MakeMake. Executive producers include David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, and Jon Weinbach for Skydance Sports; Jamie Horowitz, Manning for Omaha Productions, and Ross Ketover, Keith Cossrow, Jessica Boddy, Rodgers, and Brian Rolapp for NFL Films.

Looking at John Elway’s career
Elway spent his entire career with the Broncos (1983-1998) and became one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. He led the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances and won back-to-back Super Bowl titles in his final two years in the league.
Along with being a two-time Super Bowl champion, Elway was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times, named to the All-Pro Second Team three times, won the NFL MVP award in 1987, and was named MVP of Super Bowl XXXIII. Elway is a member of the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2004.
Elway also had success as an NFL general manager. He was the Broncos’ GM from 2011 to 2021 and helped the Broncos win the Super Bowl during the 2015 season. During that year, the Boncos QB was another Hall of Famer, Peyton Manning.
