The Atlanta Hawks are looking to move on from their All-Star point guard, Trae Young, before the trade deadline. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Young and his agents are working with the Hawks on a trade. Charania said Young’s reps and the Hawks have started talks over the last week.

This is not a big surprise considering the Hawks elected not to offer a contract extension to Trae Young. The 27-year-old guard has this and next year at $95 million total remaining on his contract, with a player option next offseason.

The 2025-26 season has been challenging for Young, as he has dealt with leg injuries. He has missed 27 games this season, but the Hawks are 15-12 when he’s out of the lineup. When Young is on the floor, Atlanta is 2-8.

One of the things the Hawks have done over the years is build a solid roster. Forward Jalen Johnson has emerged this year, averaging 24 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 8.5 assists per contest. The Hawks are also getting quality production out of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who is averaging a career-high 20.7 points per game.

More on Trae Young’s career with the Hawks

Young joined the Hawks in 2018 after the Hawks traded for him. The trade happened following the 2018 NBA Draft when the Dallas Mavericks selected Young at No. 5 overall. In exchange for Young, the Hawks sent their draft pick, Luka Doncic, to Dallas.

During his time in Atlanta, Young was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, named to the All-Star team four times, and led the NBA in assists last year. Young is the Hawks’ all-time leader in three-pointers and assists, and he led the team to three playoff appearances, including a run to the Eastern Conference finals in 2021, where they lost to the eventual NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks.

After the end of the 2024-25 season, Young spoke to the media about how he could help the Hawks win a championship. “We’re one of the 30 NBA teams, and I feel like you can win here. I’ve won before here – I haven’t won a championship, but I’ve achieved a lot of things here, and I know what it takes,” Young told reporters in April, per Sports Illustrated. “I definitely feel like I can win.”
