Report: Mike McCarthy to interview for Titans head coach opening
On Saturday, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is scheduled to interview with the Tennessee Titans for their head coach opening, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. McCarthy was the Cowboys’ head coach from 2020-24.
In his five seasons at the helm of the organization, McCarthy led the Cowboys to a 49-35 overall record. Dallas went 1-3 in the NFL playoffs under McCarthy and never advanced to the NFC Championship game.
Prior to his time in Dallas, McCarthy was the Green Bay Packers’ head coach from 2006-18. In 2010, McCarthy guided the Packers to their first Super Bowl win since 1996. The Tennessee Titans have never won the Super Bowl.
McCarthy also had an interview scheduled with the New York Giants, but the organization ultimately hired John Harbaugh. If McCarthy accepts an offer to coach the Titans, he’ll have a tall task ahead of him.
Tennessee has posted back-to-back 3-14 seasons. In fact, the organization hasn’t had a winning season since 2021.

Of course, there’s still hope for the future. The Titans own the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and selected quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft.
Ward completed 59.8% of his pass attempts for 3,169 yards and 15 touchdowns, while only throwing seven interceptions. Additionally, Ward notched 159 yards and two scores on the ground. Earlier this week, ESPN’s Turron Davenport discussed how the Titans could use their first-round 2026 pick.
“It’s tough to decide between wide receiver, cornerback and edge rusher, but simply put, the Titans need more impact players,” Davenport wrote. “Since selecting Corey Davis No. 5 overall in 2016, they have only selected a receiver or edge rusher once — which was Treylon Burks in 2022 after acquiring the pick when they traded A.J. Brown to the Eagles. The last cornerback selected in the first round was Caleb Farley in 2021.
“Although they’ve taken a few premier player swings by signing Calvin Ridley and trading for L’Jarius Sneed, it’s possible neither is on the roster next season. Tennessee needs to bring in someone to help quarterback Cam Ward take the next step, and that probably makes receiver the top need. But don’t underestimate the importance of an impact pass rusher to be Jeffery Simmons‘ running mate, too.”
