Future Hall of Fame quarterback Philip Rivers is interviewing for the Buffalo Bills head coaching vacancy on Friday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news that has been confirmed by multiple outlets now.

Rivers, who had last played in 2020, came out of retirement this season and played in three games for the Indianapolis Colts. He is the current head coach of St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, AL.

Rivers’ transition into becoming an NFL head coach just one month after playing in his last NFL game would certainly be the fastest turnaround in league history. Rivers had been coaching at St. Michael Catholic High School when the Indianapolis Colts came calling in December. He picked up the call and started in three games, resetting his Hall of Fame clock while unfortunately losing all three games.

In defeat, however, Rivers showed that he could certainly still sling the pigskin. In three games, the NC State alum completed 63% of his passes for 544 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions. During the Jan. 1 edition of the ‘Up and Adams Show,’ Rivers discussed why coaching is important to him.

“I’ve not ruled it out,” Rivers said when asked about jumping into the broadcasting world. “But every opportunity that’s been close to coming or has come up just hasn’t felt right. … The one thing I’ve loved since I was however old playing this game, and being now as a coach, is I’ve been able to have some impact on the score. You might be good at it, talking about it, but I have nothing to do with the outcome of this game.”

Buffalo is seeking a new head coach after parting ways with Sean McDermott following the Bills’ 33-30 loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round. Across nine seasons, McDermott led the organization to a 98-50 record with Playoff appearances in eight of nine seasons. They, however, never made it to the Super Bowl, which prompted the front office to look elsewhere.

With NFL MVP quarterback Josh Allen reportedly sitting in on the meetings, it should come as no surprise that Philip Rivers is interviewing with the organization. Rivers, who played 18 seasons across two organizations (San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts), is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent quarterbacks to ever play the game.
