Scouting Report
Hyper physical two-way playmaker who is a truly dominant player on Friday nights. Measured in at between 6-feet and 6-foot-1 and around 185 pounds as a junior. Stars as a wide receiver and safety for his high school program. Shows an elite combination of effort and physicality on both sides of the ball. Dominates at the small school level like you’d hope from a national prospect. Caught 46 passes for 1,487 yards (32.3 yards per catch) and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 1,036 yards and nine scores at 15.9 yards per carry as a junior. Tallied 74 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. Has a play personality ideally suited for defense. Flies around the field in pursuit with the motor running hot. Runs through ball carriers on contact. Highly effective as a blitzer off the edge. Played more of a free safety role as a sophomore and showed his range, coming down with a high interception total. Primarily used in the short passing game as a receiver with most of his targets coming with 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. Dangerous with the ball in his hands. Picks up most of his yardage after the catch. Good vision in the open field and bounces off of contact. Shows the capability to elevate and high-point. A multi-sport athlete, playing basketball, baseball and running track. Will need to hone his technical ability if he ends up as a full-time receiver, specifically his route-running and catching technique. True top end speed is a lingering question as he has yet to crack 12.0 seconds in the 100 meters. Capable of being an impact player on both sides of the ball with his physicality, effort level and ball skills coming as an ideal projection at safety.

Personal Life
Southside head coach Charles Moody Jr. said he is never surprised at what Derick Smith does on the field. "Derick has a lot of instinctive motivation,” Moody told the Selma Times-Journal. "He comes to work every day and continues to strive to be the best he can be. He's just scratching the surface of how great he can be. It's going to be exciting to watch him grow and develop. He's already special. But in five years from now, he's going to be one of a kind." Smith accounted for more than 2,500-yards and 23 total touchdowns his junior season while playing multiple positions for Southside. Defensively, Smith enjoyed a similar level of success in 2023, posting a stat line of 98 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, eight interceptions and 13 pass breakups.
