Reminds Us Of

Shaq Thompson
Shaq Thompson
LB / 6-0 / 228
Washington · HS Class of 2012
2015 Draft · Rnd 1 · Pick 25

Both Harold Perkins and Shaq Thompson were two-way threats at the high school level as dynamic running backs who projected on defense long-term. Thompson was an On3 Consensus top ten prospect coming out of Sacramento Grant Union in the 2012 cycle. The future Carolina Panther linebacker was primarily viewed as a big safety prospect at the time. Thompson was a prolific running back in high school, rushing for over 3,000 yards and 47 touchdowns while averaging 10.8 yards per carry. Perkins was similar, rushing for 1,194 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior while averaging an amazing 17.8 yards per carry. Both Thompson and Perkins also showed top-end speed. Thompson posted a 10.96 second mark in the 100 meters while Perkins ran an electronically-timed 4.47 40-yard dash prior to his junior season. Thompson appears to have a little more length than Perkins, who may be a touch taller. Like Thompson, Perkins also has the talent to see some time on offense in college, before ultimately settling in at linebacker long-term.

Harold Perkins

Scouted byCharles Power

Harold Perkins entered the week at Under Armour as the de facto top linebacker prospect nationally. Perkins had a relatively quiet week. Some of that may have been due to seeing some time as a running back in practice. Still, we saw the Texas A&M commit’s elite athleticism on display over the course of the week. He’s one of the best athletes relative to his position in the cycle. Though he’s been listed at around 6-foot-3, Perkins looked to be closer to 6-foot-1 to our eyes.

Personal Life

LSU coach Brian Kelly calls Harold Perkins his "most versatile chess piece" on defense. Perkins can play about anywhere on defense – inside linebacker, outside linebacker and as EDGE rusher. “His versatility is important to what we do on defense,” Kelly said. “He is now physically able to play inside out and still is twitchy off the edge. He can still cover if he needs to cover. He’s made himself into the player he needed to be, and it’s going to be fun to watch him. He’s an every-down linebacker who can play sideline-to-sideline.” Perkins arrived in Baton Rouge as one of the nation's most heralded recruits coming out of Cypress Park High School in the Houston area. He earned freshman All-American honors and was an All-SEC pick during his first two seasons at LSU. He posted 147 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two interceptions and seven pass breakups in his first two seasons.
