4-star TE Carter Nelson sets commitment date

Ainsworth (Neb.) four-star tight end Carter Nelson will be revealing his college destination very soon. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound recruit announced Monday that he will be committing on June 28.

Nelson is the No. 57 overall prospect and No. 3 tight end in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in Nebraska.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Nebraska has a commanding lead for his commitment at 94.4%. He took an official visit to the Cornhuskers last weekend.

Three other schools have also hosted Nelson for official visits. They are Georgia (June 2), Notre Dame (June 9) and Penn State (June 16).

Landing Nelson would be a massive recruiting win for head coach Matt Rhule and his staff. The Cornhuskers already have commitments from three of the top four players in Nebraska in Bellevue (Neb.) Bellevue West four-star wide receiver Dae’vonn Hall, Omaha (Neb.) Bellevue West three-star wide receiver Isaiah McMorris and Bellevue (Neb.) Bellevue West three-star quarterback Daniel Kaelin.

“Nebraska was by to see me today,” Nelson told Bryan Munson of Husker Online on Dec. 5. “They told me they would be out to see me every week and every time they can.”

“I would say that it felt different,” he added about one of his visits to Lincoln. “It was a fun trip. The coaches just made everyone feel at home.”

Nelson discusses his interest in Notre Dame and Penn State

Notre Dame: “It was a good trip for sure,” Nelson told Mike Singer of Blue and Gold on Dec. 14. “It was good to finally meet the coaches in person and see how they play. The snow was fun; that was a good experience.”

“I was really excited to meet him, and that lived up to my expectations for sure,” he added about offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Gerad Parker. “It was really good to talk to him and learn more about him.”

Penn State: “We’ve been able to get on the phone multiple times, and that’s definitely going really well,” Nelson told Ryan Snyder of BlueWhiteIllustrated on Dec. 27 about his conversations with tight ends coach Ty Howle. “I like him a lot and hope to continue building on what we’ve been building so far. With Coach Howle, it’s been a lot about how family-oriented it is at Penn State. That’s what he loves most about it.”

“I know they’re a really good football team,” he added. “They’re always one of the top schools in the Big Ten.”
