Georgia State recruiting is reaching new heights under head coach Dell McGee

Dell McGee became the head coach at Georgia State in February after working as Georgia’s assistant head coach, run game coordinator and running backs coach across eight years with the Bulldogs. After spending nearly a decade at one of college football’s top programs, he is making headlines on the recruiting trail ahead of his first season with the Panthers. 

Georgia State’s 2025 recruiting class is currently on track to be the most successful in program history. One of the Panthers’ most significant offensive commitments came on Aug. 8, as Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake three-star running back Tomir Bransford chose Georgia State over offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, Missouri, Penn State and Utah. 

The Sun Belt Conference program has also landed a pair of top-800 recruits in Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep three-star wide receiver Kyle Washington and Greer (S.C.) three-star running back LaDainnian Martin, along with five standout offensive linemen. They include Miami (Fla.) Miami Central three-star interior offensive lineman Woody Celucien, Stockbridge (Ga.) offensive tackle Xavier Spikes, Lawrenceville (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge offensive tackle Dennis Uzochukwu, Snellville (Ga.) Shiloh offensive tackle Pherleski Martin and Griffin (Ga.) Spalding offensive tackle AJ Andrews. 

Georgia State has also landed some quality pledges on the defensive side of the ball, including Demopolis (Ala.) defensive lineman Alex Mullings, New Brockton (Ala.) Elba linebacker Cayden Adkins and Loganville (Ga.) Grayson EDGE Chandler Covington. 

Georgia State’s coaches are a crucial part of the Panthers’ recruiting success

Sources have indicated to On3 that Georgia State aims to sign at least 25 high school players in the 2025 cycle and may add as many as 35. The Panthers are placing a special emphasis on recruiting Georgia, but are also strategically focusing on other states in the Southeast including 

Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. 

One of the reasons why Georgia State has been able to lay the foundation for future success is because McGee, defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney have previously coached with championship-caliber programs. Chaney, who has previously coached at Georgia along with Arkansas and Tennessee among other programs, worked with McGee in Athens from 2016-2018. Sherrer also coached at Georgia and Tennessee, along with Georgia Tech and the New York Giants. 

The SEC and NFL experience of McGee and his staff are helping the Panthers assemble a strong roster marked by size and speed. Georgia State’s current commits have already made a significant impact on the Panthers’ recruiting efforts and program trajectory. That is why the Atlanta-based school will be one to watch as we head towards National Signing Day.
