Top-20 JP Estrella recaps Iowa visit; talks Syracuse

Last week, On3 broke the news that JP Estrella canceled his Duke visit. That left two scheduled visits for On3’s No. 18 ranked player in the 2023 class, Iowa and Syracuse. He has taken previous official visits to Tennessee and Marquette.
The 6-foot-11 center wrapped up his Iowa visit on July 29. On3 caught up with JP Estrella to recap his visit.
“I was interested in Iowa because of how well they used their bigs and how well they developed them,” Estrella said. “On my visit, I learned a lot about their strength stuff; I really enjoyed that. I learned the team has great chemistry. They are all super close off the court and on. You can see the players really like each other and their coaches. I enjoyed being a part of that.”
Estrella talked further about the team chemistry when speaking about his favorite part of the visit.

“My favorite part of the visit,” Estrella said, “was when the whole team went to Coach (Fran) McCaffery’s house. We all just hung out, played ping-pong, and ate lots of food. We also watch the TBT, which was fun as well. That was the best part of the visit for me.”
The top-20 ranked player has one visit remaining, Syracuse. Syracuse was Estrella’s first offer on August 20, 2001. That visit is scheduled to start on August 4.
“The biggest thing that sticks out to me about Syracuse is how they have done with their big men in Coach (Jim) Boeheim’s area,” Estrella said. “I also have one of the best relationships with them as well. They are getting a visit because of the relationship I have developed with their staff. Their player development program stands out too.”
Estrella’s take
“The biggest thing for me is culture,” Estrella said. “I’ll be giving up my family, moving away, so I want to have another family in the program. I want to see if I can develop a great fit with the entire community of the school. So I’ll be looking at a lot of off-the-court stuff on my visits. But also, I want to go to a place that is a great fit basketball-wise too.
