Overview

Texas A&M’s tight end group has been revamped almost entirely from last year, with Tre Watson and Shane Calhoun graduating and Jaden Platt and Donovan Green transferring. In the eyes of most, that group won’t be remembered for what they did, but what they didn’t do, and that’s help get a yard on fourth and 1 a total of four times against Texas and South Carolina.

This group isn’t necessarily bigger — all the tight ends last year were officially 250 pounds or more — but it’s stronger and more experienced. Boerkircher and Riley both bring plenty of Power 4 experience unlike Watson and Calhoun (Fresno State and East Carolina, respectively). They’re also not coming off a serious knee injury, like Green was. They know their job: block and get that yard they couldn’t last year (though Boerkircher, especially, has shown he can definitely catch so far during training camp).

Ohrstrom is the starter and the closest thing to a three-down tight end the Aggies have. He’s got size and he showed last year that he can stretch the field some — and he has a good rapport with starting quarterback Marcel Reed. If one tight end is out there, it’s him. If there’s three, he’s out there.

Niblack’s primary job is different. He’s here to primarily catch passes. Niblack’s been getting work with the receivers as well as the tight ends, which makes sense considering the lack of height A&M has at that position. He’s left a strong positive impression so far and could be used in many different formations.

Armstrong is interesting for many reasons, not the least of which are his freakish size, his athletic ability and the simple fact he’s a true freshman. If there are any tight ends like him, there aren’t many, but he may get a year to get stronger with all of the other tight ends being upperclassmen. All the same, he’s one of the most interesting freshmen to arrive in the 2025 class and his future would appear to be very bright.

The spotlight’s on

Ohrstrom. It was expected it would take a couple of years for him to contribute and the Big Swede was right on schedule in 2024. Now, the Aggies need him to take a very big step forward and become a greater passing threat and better blocker. He’s the guy amongst the tight ends, and Texas A&M needs him to play as such.
