BREAKING: Sun Devils name their starting QB

There are some starting position battles and two-deep decisions to be made between now and the Sun Devils’ September 5^th opener, but the one position battle that has naturally been under the microscope ever since spring has now been decided.

Following today’s practice, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham announced that Kentucky transfer and third-year player Cutter Boley.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Boley played in 11 of 12 games for the Wildcats in the 2025 season and started in 10 of those contests. During that campaign, he passed for 2,160 yards and 15 touchdowns with 12 interceptions, posting a completion rate of 65.8%. He also scored two rushing touchdowns. Boley set the school freshman record for both touchdown passes and completion rate, and after playing in eight SEC games last year, he ranked 3rd in pass completion percentage in that conference.

Dillingham’s familiarity with Boley led Arizona State to target the quarterback on the first day of the transfer portal, which, just days later, on January 3^{rd, led} to Boley committing to the Sun Devils.

“So I recruited him to Oregon when I was there. And I just remember he was a really good athlete. People don’t give him enough credit for his athleticism,” Dillingham said in a previous interview. “He’s a very good athlete. Was a good basketball player. And then he had all the arm strength and all the ability of what he could do.

“I remembered who he was, and I remembered a lot about him from his visit out there to Oregon. It was someone that I knew I wanted to target from the beginning. What excites me about him is his completion percentage was fairly high for what they (Kentucky) were asking him to do. I saw him operate within their system really well, get the ball to where they were supposed to go, extend with his legs when he needed to.”

When Boley reflected on his development after transferring from Kentucky, he noted that this past spring was the first time he had a high-level quarterback coach in ASU offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo. In a previous interview, Boley said that over the summer, he focused on certain aspects to help me prepare for fall camp and the upcoming season.

“Getting overall stronger is something I was working on a lot in the offseason,” Boley described, “my footwork and getting my feet faster. I put a lot of muscle on my legs and my body in general as a whole. I really took care of my arm…so those are some big things I did as an offseason.”

The acclimatization process for Boley has gotten easier and easier, as he noted that his comfort and the ability to operate the offense have increased by leaps and bounds since arriving here, which is important on a team with nearly four dozen newcomers.

“We have a lot of new guys with 40-something,” Boley remarked. “As a whole entire group, everyone’s came along, and this is starting to feel just like another thing. You show up, and you know exactly what you’re doing. We spent countless hours in here as a team just doing extra stuff together because we wanted to, because we know where we want to be, and we know where we want to get to, and what our goals are.

“That was something super special. We knew it would pay off now, and we’re starting to see it pay off early on in (fall) camp.”
