Scouting Southeastern QBs Carson Camp & Kyle Lowe

SELA Quarterback Battle
Southeastern’s quarterback battle has yet to be officially decided, but transfers Carson Camp and Kyle Lowe are reported to be the favorites. Camp did not play a snap during the 2024 season, and Lowe threw a total of 7 passes, so this will be the only scouting preview where PFF cannot be used to paint the picture. Both QBs have made a couple of stops before arriving in Hammond, so let’s get to know the guys Tech will be seeing on Saturday night at Joe Aillet.
QB Carson Camp
Carson Camp enters his fourth collegiate season and first full year with Southeastern after previous stops at South Dakota and Sacramento State. The 6’3”, 215-pound Bloomington, Illinois, native made history at USD as the first true freshman QB to start for the Coyotes and went on to throw for more than 2,252 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2021. Camp also delivered one of the most iconic plays in FCS football in recent memory, a 57-yard Hail Mary to defeat No. 7 South Dakota State, a play that earned national “Play of the Year” honors. After transferring to Sac State, Camp saw limited action, throwing for 219 yards and 1 touchdown. If Camp plays on Saturday, it will be his first game action since 2023.
Strengths and Breakdown
- Accurate underneath passer with touch on intermediate throws.
- Poised under pressure with a glimpse of late-game heroics.
- Experienced leader who’s comfortable managing an offense.
Narrative Breakdown
Camp is the more proven commodity in this QB battle. His track record suggests he could stabilize the Lions’ passing game, which has been inconsistent in recent years, and give Southeastern a true “game manager with upside.” Despite being absent last season, Camp still has significantly more experience than Lowe.
QB Kyle Lowe
Kyle Lowe is the wildcard in Southeastern’s quarterback competition. The 5’10”, 195-pound dual-threat from Collierville, Tennessee, transferred in from Georgia State after starting his career at Middle Tennessee. A three-star recruit out of high school, Lowe built his reputation as a dual threat playmaker, accounting for 20 passing touchdowns and 13 rushing touchdowns as a senior at Fayette Ware. After throwing just one pass with the Blue Raiders and being the 3rd string quarterback for Georgia State, Low is looking for his first opportunity to make an impact. Even if Lowe does not start on Saturday, his legs might be utilized in red zone and short yardage packages to test the Bulldogs’ new look defense.
Strengths and Breakdown
- Dynamic athlete who can extend plays outside of structure.
- Effective runner in the zone-read and QB power game.
- High-ceiling, raw passer still working on consistency.
Narrative Angle
If Camp represents experience and steadiness, Lowe represents upside and unpredictability. His dual-threat ability could give Southeastern a different look, especially against aggressive defenses that overcommit to pressure. Against Louisiana Tech, his scrambling ability could challenge containment and force adjustments in the Bulldogs’ defensive front.
Gameday Expectation
Head coach Frank Scelfo hasn’t named a starter, and there’s a chance both quarterbacks see action in Week 1. The Lions could lean on Camp’s prior experience early while using Lowe in situational packages to maximize his athleticism. For the Bulldogs, preparing for both quarterbacks means preparing for two very different styles: the steady pocket passer versus the elusive playmaker.
