Both players were instrumental in Stanford’s 78-69 victory over Cal on Sunday, December 14th. Ogden had a career-high 25 points on 10-12 shooting from the field, 1-2 shooting from 3-point range, and 4-5 shooting from the foul line while also having seven rebounds. Somfai had a double-double, her fourth of the season, finishing with 12 points and 13rebounds.
For Ogden, having a career scoring night against your rival has to feel good. She was all smiles after the game. The biggest thing that she can take from this game is that she doesn’t need to rely on her 3-point shot to make an impact. Nine of her 10 field goals were 2-point shots. She was cutting, moving without the ball, attacking the rim, etc. She scored in just about every way imaginable, which is what great scorers all do.
“Like you said, I think it’s definitely shot selection,” Ogden said of the key to her success. “My teammates put me in the right spots where I don’t have to, I guess work as hard to get up a good shot and so that really helps. But yeah, definitely shot selection for me.”
Regarding Somfai’s performance, she continues to be effective at scoring and rebounding at an efficient clip. She’s averaging 10.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, at least knocking on the door of a double-double every night. She’s getting more confident as the season goes on and is playing like someone who is going to be a star player both this season and in the seasons to come. Somfai feels like she owes a lot of her success to the great Australian players that have come before her.
“I think definitely Lauren Jackson,” Somfai said of which Aussie players she has looked up to. “I really look up to her. I’ve met her a few times, actually and she’s always like been super kind and given a lot of good, right advice. So I definitely look up to her. And like Penny Taylor as well. Them two. But yeah, I think there’s a lot of amazing basketball players from Australia and I think just like growing up, we really have a great system and I think that definitely sets the base for us.”
Stanford will stay at home for their next game against No. 22 Washington on Friday, December 19th. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM PT on ACCNX.
