On Friday, former Stanford men’s basketball star and Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame member (2021) Josh Childress announced on Instagram that he is now a member of the Stanford Athletics Board. Childress played three years at Stanford (2001-04), the final three years of head coach Mike Montgomery’s time on The Farm, averaging 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. As a junior, Childress averaged 15.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game, making the All-American 2nd Team before going on to get drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the 6th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft.

Childress would go on to play eight seasons in the NBA with the Hawks, Suns, Nets, and Pelicans from 2004-05 to 2013-14 with a couple of years in Greece with Olympiacos in between. From 2014-15 through 2017-18, he also played overseas for a variety of different clubs. Childress averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game for his NBA career.

Childress’ best two seasons in the NBA was from 2006-08 with the Hawks. In the 2006-07 season, Childress averaged 13.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game, good enough to finish 11th in the 6th Man of the Year voting. Had he played in more than 55 games, he likely would have finished even higher in the voting given what happened the following season. In 2007-08, Childress played in 76 games, averaging 11.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 36.7% from 3-point range. Childress finished 6th in the 6th Man of the Year voting.

Childress is one of the best players to ever come through Stanford and knows what it takes to play winning basketball on The Farm. In his final season, Stanford got a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, finishing 30-2 overall and 17-1 in the Pac-10. That team unfortunately got bounced in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, but that’s a season that today’s Stanford program would love to have.

Having Childress as part of the athletics board should help Stanford men’s basketball return to prominence. You always want guys like that around your program given their knowledge and expertise. He can help inspire the players and offer valuable insights. It’ll be fun to see what he does in his new role and how hands on he is with the basketball team in particular.
