Stanford freshman Alyssa Ahn won the ITA Women’s Northwest Regional Championship in Berkeley, dominating Cal sophomore Naomi Xu in the final 6-0, 6-1. As a result of her title, Ahn will join her teammate Valerie Glozman at the NCAA Individual Championships in Orlando, Florida from November 18th-23rd

Ahn had an impressive tournament. After dropping the first set 2-6 against Cal’s Anya Murthy in the opening Round of 64, Ahn bounced back 6-3, 6-0 to take the match and from then on did not drop a set the rest of the tournament. She clearly found her groove, capping it off with a fantastic performance in the final against Xu.

To touch quickly on Xu, she will also be making the trip to Orlando as a result of reaching the final. So despite getting dominated by Ahn, she had a fantastic tournament as well. Xu defeated Cal junior Mao Mushika 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. Mushika was the top seed, so that was a big-time win. Kinda crazy to have to face your own teammate with so much on the line, but that’s what happens in these individual tournaments.

Switching back to Ahn, she comes to The Farm as a Blue Chip 5-star talent, who has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation per TennisRecruiting.net. She earned a main draw entry into the US Open as a wild card this past summer, losing to No. 19 Elise Mertens 1-6, 0-6. Even though she got crushed by Mertens, just the fact that she made the US Open at all before playing a single college tennis match is ridiculously impressive. She’s got a very bright future.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, it’ll be interesting to see how Alyssa Ahn does in the NCAA individual singles championships and what kind of impact she makes on the team portion of the calendar come January. As Stanford seeks to win a national championship, Ahn along with the entire top rated freshman class will have to play a major role.
