Stanford head coach Frank Reich spoke to the media on Wednesday, sharing his thoughts on day one of fall training camp.
VIDEO: Stanford Football Press Conference: Fall Camp Day One
Right off the bat, Reich said he likes the energy to start fall camp. All about win the day. All about winning the rep and win the day. He likes the focus he saw from the guys. Great focus for the entire practice. He likes the tempo and competitiveness while also taking care of each other.
Reich said he is excited to be coaching in the ACC. A great conference to be in. He loves the level of play and quality of competition. Great quarterbacks, coaches, etc. He is excited for the challenge and the chance to compete for an ACC championship. That is the goal they have in mind as a team and they’re looking to take a step by step approach.
Reich likes the fact that he is now coaching a full team as opposed to the spring. It’s nice to have all the guys here. He feels like the guys have done a good job on their own the past few months. It was obvious to him that guys have put that work in during the spring as they begin fall camp.
Reich is happy with how the quarterbacks handled the huddle and had command of the offense. The defense had some nice interceptions as well. Secondary made some plays today. He loves seeing the team celebrations out there.
At quarterback, Reich said they are splitting the reps up. Open competition. They are evaluating everything every day. All facets of practice is being evaluated. They don’t have a set deadline on naming a starter. All about seeing how things evolve and who emerges.
Reich likes the quarterback transfers they have coming in: Dylan Rizk and Ben Gulbranson. He feels like they learned the scheme well and have been fast learners. Guys who are making the room more competitive.
On working with general manager Andrew Luck, Reich said he’s been phenomenal to work with. A guy who brings great leadership and will help the program ascend. He loves the vision that Luck has for the program.
As for the interim tag he has, Reich doesn’t see it as a hinderance. Luck is the leader of the program. Reich is all in for this season and that’s all he’s focused on. He is taking the approach of giving it all to the program this year.
Reich loves to see the competition out there. That’s what he’s all about. His experience being a player and a coach is you get in training camp and you’re going to have days where it feels like defense wins and then the offense wins. All about that back-and-forth aspect of football. He loves those competitive days.
Lastly, Reich loves how hard the guys have worked. Everyone is eager to get going. Get on the practice field and do their thing. That’s the big thing he’s looking for right now. He likes starting early and getting an early game at Hawaii followed by a bye in week one. He feels like that’ll give them an early chance to evaluate things and see where they are.
