First off, despite calls for a change at quarterback, Ben Gulbranson is once again listed atop the depth chart as the starting quarterback with Elijah Brown listed as the backup. I feel like I’ve exhausted this topic over the past couple of weeks, but for those that haven’t been keeping up, Gulbranson has had a difficult start to the season and many fans are eager to see a different quarterback get the start. Perhaps a home game against Boston College will do him good and get the offense to finally find their groove.
Secondly, no Simione Pale on the offensive line. He’s dealing with a knee injury and is week-to-week. With him out, senior Fisher Anderson is sliding into the starting right guard spot. Anderson is also backup left tackle, so he’s prepared to play at multiple spots. But for now, he’s slated to start at right guard. Pale’s absence is significant since on paper he’s the top offensive lineman on the team. Really imperative for the whole unit to rally while he’s out.
Third, with wide receiver Jordan Onovughe out, freshman Liam Thorpe is now number two on the depth chart behind CJ Williams. Thorpe is also number one on the depth chart at both punt and kick return, so he’s projected to get a lot of action this weekend. Thorpe has tremendous speed and that’s something that Stanford could use more of. It’ll be exciting to see what he does against the Eagles.
As for the defense, nothing has changed. It’s the same group. And that’s good news given how well they played last week. The more continuity those guys can get with each other, the better.
Lastly, with Thorpe sliding to the top of the return spots, running back Sedrick Irvin Jr. is now number two at kick returner while wide receiver Bryce Farrell is number two at punt returner. Stanford has been kinda shuffling things around a bit with the return game. Ideally, that’s a spot where you have a consistent person. It’s important for returners to get a rhythm and gain confidence. Otherwise, you run the risk of having costly miscues. Hopefully for Stanford, Thorpe can be the guy permanently going forward. They gotta pick a return man and stick with him.
