Stanford football has released their depth chart in advance of their game at BYU on Saturday, September 6th. Below are some thoughts and takeaways.

GoStanford.com: Stanford Depth Chart-BYU

First of all, there are no changes made to the quarterback position. Despite his horrible performance against Hawaii, sixth year grad transfer Ben Gulbranson will run it back against BYU as the starter. Stanford better hope his poor outing against Hawaii was due more to just nerves and perhaps not being as settled into the playbook as he will in the future. This weekend will tell us a lot about what we can expect from Gulbranson moving forward.

Secondly, the secondary hopefully will be deeper than it was against Hawaii as safety Scotty Edwards and cornerback Collin Wright are both listed as starting. Edwards technically co-starting with Jay Green. The absence of Edwards and Wright against Hawaii really hurt Stanford as Hawaii had some deep passes that may not have happened had those guys been roaming the secondary.

Third, on the offensive line, right tackle is listed as Kahlil House or Emeka Ugorji. House injured his ankle against Hawaii, which I’m guessing is why there is this designation. That said, I do have some intel on what direction House is likely trending. Do make sure to check out the message boards for that information.

Fourth, after listing running back Chris Davis Jr. as the main kick and punt returner for the Hawaii game, Stanford now has running backs Cole Tabb and Sedrick Irvin Jr. as the primary kick returners and wide receivers Bryce Farrell and Caden High as the punt returners. So, a bit of a shakeup at that spot.

Finally, the rest is the same as the depth chart for the game at Hawaii. Stanford is hoping that with a healthier version of themselves against BYU, perhaps that will make a big enough difference for them to pull off the surprise upset. It should be interesting to see.
