Drake Lindsey named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for performance against Rutgers
Minnesota starting quarterback Drake Lindsey was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his performance against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday in a 31-28 win.
Lindsey in the win completed 31-of-41 passing attempts for 324 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
According to the University of Minnesota athletic department, Lindsey is the Gopher quarterback to have a game with at least that many completions, attempts, yards, and touchdowns, with no interceptions, since at least 1995.
For the season, Lindsey has completed 77-of-117 passing attempts, a 65.8% completion percentage for 958 yards and seven touchdowns in four games played. His 324 yards against Rutgers is the second time this season that he has passed for 290 yards or more in a game.
“I think just the consistency of him every week growing and getting better,” P.J. Fleck said on Monday about Lindsey. “We talk about this word courage, and I said this earlier on one of my interviews. I said that it takes a lot of courage for coaches to play freshmen. But it takes a lot of courage from the player as a freshman to play, and play at a high level.”
The redshirt freshman will have his toughest battle yet this upcoming weekend when the Gophers take on the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus. The Buckeyes have allowed just 132 passing yards per game this season while also being the nation’s top scoring defense, allowing just 5.5 points per game.
