Minnesota Countdown to Kickoff: No. 43 LB Ethan Stendel
The Minnesota Golden Gophers’ countdown to kickoff for their 2025 season opener is down to 43 days, bringing true freshman linebacker Ethan Stendel into our player spotlight.
The Caledonia, Minnesota, native was a four-star prospect according to On3, ranked 299 nationally and as the No. 32 linebacker in the cycle. He was also ranked as the top player in the state of Minnesota ahead of talents such as Luke Emmerich, Meyer Swinney, and Emmanuel Karmo.
At Caledonia, Stendel contributed in all three facets of the game as a quarterback, linebacker, and kicker. On offense, Stendel in 2024 threw for over 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns while also totaling over 60 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Defensviely, he had 57 tackles as well as three interceptions while forcing two fumbles.
In 2025, Stendel is likely in for a redshirt season as he continues to develop both physically as well as on the field. However, long-term, Stendel has the potential to be a multi-year starter for the Golden Gophers.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers will kick off their 2025 season on August 28 against the Buffalo Bulls at Hunginton Bank Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised natioanlly on Fox Sports 1.
