P.J. Fleck's one year extension becomes official

The one-year extension that will keep Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck in the Twin Cities through 2030 became official on Wednesday.
THE TERMS
The deal extends Fleck’s original seven-year extension that he signed in 2022 and included updated changes in retention bonuses and buyout terms. With the new deal, Fleck will receive an extension bonus that is split each year on September 1 and December 31. The first year of the bonus will be this year, a $1,000,000 bonus. That bonus will increase by $100,000 each year, with the biggest bonus being at $1,600,000 in 2030.
When it comes to his buyout terms, Fleck’s buyout, if he were to leave for another job beginning in 2025 will be $5,500,000. It decreases to $4.5 million in 2026, $3 million in 2027, $2 million in 2028, and $1 million in 2029. IF Fleck were to be terminated by the university, he will be entitled to a termination fee equal to 70% of his base salary, supplemental compensation, and retention bonus.
FLECK ENTERS YEAR NINE
The 2025 season will be Fleck’s ninth with the Golden Gophers. Through his first eight seasons, the 44-year old head coach has amassed a 56-39 record including a perfect 6-0 postseason record.
His 58 wins with the program rank fifth all-time in program history. He sits six wins behind Glen Mason who is currently in fourth place with 64 wins. Notably, his .589 winning percentage is the best of any program head coach since 1950 and is the fourth best all-time of coaches with five or more years with the program.
Prior to his time with the Gophers, Fleck spent four years at Western Michigan collecting a 30-22 record including a 13-1 record in 2016.
Fleck and the Golden Gophers are set to begin their 2025 season on August 28 against the Buffalo Bulls at Huntington Bank Stadium.
