Sunday’s non-conference matchup between Minnesota and Texas Southern was as nondescript and mundane as it could get on paper, but Minnesota senior guard Cade Tyson made it one that Gophers fans and those watching won’t soon forget.

Tyson put together one of the greatest scoring days by a Gopher all-time with 38 points, finishing 11-of-19 from the field, knocking down eight of 12 three-point attempts and adding eight free throws in the process, nearly accounting for half of Minnesota’s offense in the game.

Thanks to Tyson’s performance, Minnesota started its final stretch of non-conference games with an 89-53 win over Texas Southern.

Tyson became just one of 11 players in program history to reach the 38-point mark in a game. The program record remains 42 points, last accomplished by Oliver Shannon on March 6, 1971. Eric Magdanz also scored 42 points on March 5, 1962.

Three other Gophers finished the afternoon with double-digit scoring efforts, as Jaylen Crocker-Johnson recorded 14 points, Isaac Asuma had 13, and Bobby Durkin added 12. Grayson Grove also had six points off the bench.

Early in Sunday’s matchup, Texas Southern hung around and kept the game close. Minnesota was unable to push its lead into double digits until the 9:22 mark of the first half, when a Jaylen Crocker-Johnson three-pointer capped an 11-0 run.

Once they did, the Gophers didn’t look back, growing the lead to as high as 22 points in the first half. At halftime, Minnesota led 45-25.

The second half offered much of the same as the first, as Minnesota outscored Texas Southern 44–28 over the final 20 minutes en route to a blowout victory.

For the game, the Gophers shot 49.1% from the field including 44.1% from three-point range, making 15-of-34 three-point attempts. Gophers not named Cade Tyson were 7-of-22 from three-point range in the win with Isaac Asuma notably making 3-of-6 attempts. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson was also 2-of-4 from deep. The Gophers also shot 72% from the free-throw line.

Comparatively, Texas Southern shot 36% from the floor but just 17% from three-point range, making just three of 18 total attempts. They were also 12-of-13 from the line.

Minnesota will be back in action next Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CT against Campbell at Williams Arena.
