On Friday morning, Gatorade announced its Football Players of the Year, including the Minnesota Football Player of the Year — and this year’s award went to one of the most prolific athletes in the history of Minnesota high school football.

Minnesota signee Roman Voss, a standout at Jackson County Central and a Rivals Industry Rankings four-star prospect, was named the award winner.

Voss earned the honor after completing a senior season in which he posted 1,902 passing yards, 21 touchdown passes, 1,893 rushing yards, and 30 additional touchdowns on the ground, while leading Jackson County Central to a 13-0 record and a Class AA state championship.

Voss closed out his high school career with more than 12,000 passing yards and 143 touchdowns, finishing No. 2 in state history in career scoring throws.

“I have no one to compare Roman to,” LeSueur-Henderson High School head coach Jim Wagner said of Voss. “He is a great player and directed his team well. He certainly changes the game.”

According to the Rivals Industry Rankings, Voss is the No. 280 player overall in the country, the No. 13 tight end, and the No. 2 player in the state of Minnesota.

Previous Minnesota Gatorade Players of the Year include Chase Thompson (Clemson – basketball), Maxwell Woods (Washington State), Carson Hansen (Iowa State), Trey Feeney (North Dakota / St. John’s), and Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga – basketball).

The last Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year to play for the Gophers was former Owatonna standout Jason Williamson, who retired from football in the summer of 2021. Williamson won the honor for both the 2017 and 2018 football seasons.

Voss is set to enroll at the University of Minnesota next summer.
