Good morning, Nebraska fans. Welcome to game day.

Today’s 11 a.m. Big Ten tilt against Northwestern inside Memorial Stadium is a crucial one for Husker head coach Matt Rhule and how the direction of his program is perceived.

Nebraska (5-2, 2-2 B1G) needs to rebound from an embarrassing 24-6 loss at Minnesota last Friday. It was a game that featured plenty of disappointment inside and outside the program.

“We preach ownership, and I did not have the team prepared to be the more physical team,” Rhule said Monday.

The Golden Gophers bullied the Huskers and controlled both lines of scrimmage. They sacked quarterback Dylan Raiola nine times. It also marked the first game of Rhule’s Nebraska tenure where the Huskers didn’t score a touchdown. A response is needed today.

Standing in the way is David Braun’s Northwestern Wildcats (5-2, 3-1 B1G), who come to Lincoln with confidence. They’ve won four straight against UCLA, Louisiana-Monroe, Penn State (on the road) and Purdue, which was a 19-0 shutout last weekend.

A win today would cool the temperature of a fan base that was shocked by the outcome in Minneapolis. A loss would turn up the outside noise even louder than it was last week.

“When you lose a game at Nebraska, you feel like you’ve let an entire state down,” Rhule said Wednesday on Huskers Radio Network. “You feel like you’ve let a lot of people down. And so it sticks with you. And so you can’t let it make you sad, you can’t let it hold you back, but it can burn you and push you forward and make you fight to be the best version of yourself. So I know that’s what it’s doing to me. I’m counting on it’s doing that to our players. We’re anxious to go back out there at home and play.”
