Matt Rhule has led Nebraska football to a 6-2 record, its best start to a season since 2016 when the Huskers stormed out of the gates at 7-0 for a Top-10 national ranking.

After starting the season with a 3-0 mark – via a 20-17 season-opening win over Cincinnati, a 68-0 domination of MAC opponent Akron and a 59-7 blowout over FCS team Houston Christian – they weren’t able to get the job done against Michigan in a disappointing 30-27 loss at home. The Huskers bounced back with nice wins over Michigan State and Maryland, but they came out flat and disappointing as a newly minted Top-25 team in a national spotlight game at Minnesota.

Now, though, the Huskers have regained at least some of the momentum that was on their side after the wins over MSU and MD.

On Saturday, Rhule’s team blew a 21-6 lead at home to Northwestern and were on the ropes at the start of the fourth quarter. But John Butler’s defense and quarterback Dylan Raiola – along with the Huskers’ slew of pass catchers and one of running back Emmett Johnson’s career-best performances – paved the way to a 28-21 win over the Wildcats (5-3, 3-2).

Next up?

Arguably the most important game of the season to this point for the Year 3 version of Rhule’s program.

Nebraska vs. USC.

The Huskers (6-2, 3-2) welcome the Trojans (5-2, 3-1) to Lincoln for one of the weekend’s biggest games in CFB Week 10. It’s the NBC primetime Big Ten Saturday Night game, giving both programs a national spotlight (for the second time in three weeks for Nebraska) in the 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff window.

During his regular Game Week press conference on Monday morning, Rhule met with the media for roughly a half-hour to preview the Huskers’ pivotal matchup with USC and the game’s significance to Nebraska’s own goals – plus, he gave a more in-depth review of his team’s gritty, survive-and-advance style win over Northwestern.
