Year 3 of the Matt Rhule Era is now, officially, entered Week 2 as Nebraska football gears up for the most pivotal season year during Rhule’s tenure with the Huskers.

On Saturday evening, Nebraska held its second open practice of the preseason, conducting that session inside Memorial Stadium as part of the second Big Red Preview of the Rhule Era. Big Red Preview, an open session for both the public and the media to watch Nebraska practice, followed the annual Nebraska Football Fan Day, which was held earlier in the day inside the Hawks Championship Center.

On Tuesday morning, Nebraska held its last practice of fall camp. Rhule, his coaching staff and the Huskers have now completed eight practices of preseason training camp.

Following Tuesday’s practice, the team held its latest media availability with coaches and players. Kicking off the press conference was Nebraska defensive backs coach Addison Williams, who is entering his first season with the Huskers’ program.

Up next was Nebraska defensive coordinator John Butler, who is entering his second season on Rhule’s staff and his first season as the full-time DC. Butler first held that role for the Huskers during their Pinstripe Bowl victory over Boston College in December following a one-year stint as the Nebraska defensive backs coach.

Some Husker players – defensive linemen Elijah Jeudy and Riley Van Poppel, plus Idaho transfer defensive back and return man Andrew Marshall – were also made available to comment on the Huskers’ progress, which teammates are catching their eyes, what Nebraska needs to continue improving upon before kicking off against Cincinnati on August 28 and plenty more.

Watch and listen to Butler, Williams and the players during Tuesday’s press conference via the videos below.

The media was allotted a 20-minute open window to view practice last week, which offered Inside Nebraska an opportunity to snag five observations that stood out. Some of the highlights included Carter Nelson showcasing his physical stature and growth, Gunnar Gottula and the Husker offensive line, the quarterback work led by Dylan Raiola and offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen – in addition to quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas – and new punter Archie Wilson showing off his leg.

Read those practice notes here.

Our staff was also out in full force during Saturday’s open practice at Big Red Preview. Read the Five Observations column from staff writer Steve Marik right here, check out the practice video highlights from recruiting analyst Tim Verghese, and take a look at the photo galleries from both Tim and publisher Zack Carpenter.
