Dirty 30 at the halfway point

The 2025 campaign has reached the halfway point and as many as 20-25 programs still remain in the hunt for the 21st annual JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 National Title.  Most of the country has this next weekend off as a mandatory bye week, including the entire West Coast.

Out in California in the 3C2A ranks, five different National Division programs remain undefeated and are all ranked in the top 20.  San Mateo took over the top spot in the rankings as a result of improving to 5-0 while previously top-ranked Hutchinson was on a bye.  With a win this week against Ellsworth, we are likely see a swap again in the rankings next week.

Golden West is the top ranked team in Southern California and comes in at No. 4 overall after a 5-0 start.  The Rustlers beat up on East Los Angeles this past weekend (56-14) and have a handful of potential roadblocks during the second half of the schedule, including No. 12 Fullerton on the final week of the season.

Diablo Valley (#6) looks like the biggest threat to San Mateo in Northern California and the Vikings are 5-0 after blasting Shasta 55-0 last week.  Head coach Jimmy Collins is in his second season at DVC after winning two national titles at San Francisco, looking to become the first coach to win a Dirty 30 title at two different schools.  In 12 days the two schools will meet in San Mateo in what will easily be the headliner out west.

Ventura just keeps plugging along and flying under the radar, but the Pirates are 5-0 and up to No. 8 in the Dirty 30 Rankings.  Ventura hammered Santa Barbara City over the weekend, 73-14, and really shouldn’t be tested until the final week of the season when they host No. 19 Mt. San Antonio.

The final undefeated program out west is Southwestern College, who continues to be one of the great stories of the season.  Southwestern (#16) used to be the program that others would schedule for Homecoming but have suddenly turned things around and remain undefeated (5-0) after a thrilling overtime win against rival San Diego Mesa (40-38) this past weekend.  Things will get exponentially tougher for the Jags during the second half as the Southern League looks like the toughest league in the region.  No. 25 Riverside City, No. 24 El Camino and No. 13 Saddleback remain on the schedule during the back-half of the season.

Unlike any other previous season, the Mississippi ranks also have a mandatory bye this coming weekend.  Gulf Coast remains the only unbeaten team in the state and continues to hold the No. 3 spot in the Dirty 30 Rankings.  The Bulldogs have a tough game against No. 11 Copiah-Lincoln on October 16 that could decide a lot of things in the Magnolia State.

With minimal games this coming weekend, the top game of the week is a crossover battle between No. 5 Iowa Western and No. 14 Coffeyville.  Iowa Western’s lone loss was a thriller against Hutchinson while Coffeyville has suddenly beaten both Garden City and Butler in consecutive weeks after an early season loss to Cisco.
