The week that was in Mizzou Athletics: Sept 1-7

Here is everything that happened in Mizzou athletics this week. With recaps of what we didn’t cover and links to what we did.

Football

Kenny opened the week with a look at how future Tigers played in Week 2 of the high school season. Then I wrote about Marquis Johnson dedicating his junior season to his late mother.

Kenny wrote about Isaac Jensen setting a visit for the fall, then media got to talk with Beau Pribula, Jalen Catalon, Connor Tollison and Nicholas Rodriguez ahead of the Border War. Here are the full videos.

Then there was the full video and transcript of Eliah Drinkwitz speaking ahead of the Border War and, of course, a Said and Unsaid for Drinkwitz’s press conference.

I discussed potential weaknesses for Mizzou to take advantage of during Saturday’s game. Then I wrote about the Tiger offensive line looking for better communication moving forward. I added a story about Matt Zollers stepping into the backup QB role,

I wrote about how Eliah Drinkwitz was making sure his players understood the importance of the Border War, then the inverse as all that noise became a focus on execution during the game

Kenny wrote about how Mizzou and Kansas starters ranked as recruits, then I wrote about the Tigers trying to stop Jalon Daniels.

I talked with our Kansas site publisher Jon Kirby for Know your Foe, then Kenny put together The Friday File with a look at a whole lot of recruits coming to town Saturday.

I finished the Border War historic review series with a look at 2007, then put out some bold predictions for Saturday’s matchup.

Kenny wrote about the Tigers making a push for an offensive lineman who decommitted from Georgia State, then I wrote about how Justin Britt was stirring the pot for the revival of the Border War.

To start game day, I put out what I was looking for in the Border War. And then we hit the actual game coverage:

And Kenny wrote about Mizzou legacy Ridge Janes relishing his first Border War experience. He wrote about Lawrence Britt seeing himself fitting in with Mizzou during his visit. The Tigers then broke into the AP Poll at No. 25.

Then I finished my week with a glance around the SEC slate from Week 2 and Kenny closed up Sunday night with a look at Lance Leipold complimenting Mizzou’s front seven.

Men’s Basketball

I started to look through the Tiger basketball schedule with some analysis of Games 1 and 2. Kenny added a story about Dawson Battie and his personal connection to the Tigers’ coaching staff, then he wrote about Cameron Barnes recapping his first Mizzou visit.

Volleyball

The Tigers dropped their first match of the season Thursday, losing 24-26, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11 to Arkansas State.

The Tigers went up 2-1, but dropped the final two sets.

Caylan Alexander led the Tigers with 14 kills, while Tyrah Ariail recorded three blocks and 12 kills. Marina Crownover recorded her second double-double of the season with 43 assists and 10 digs.

Maya Sands recorded a season high with 20 digs.

The loss ended a five-match winning streak for the Tigers against the Red Wolves.

The teams matched up again the next day. This time, the Tigers came out on top 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12.

Sands reset her season high with 23 digs to go with two aces.

Janet deMarrais started a match for the first time this season and recorded 13 kills and three aces. Crownover posted another double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs, while Ariail posted eight total blocks.

The Tigers will be back in action today hosting Stanford at 8:30 p.m.

Soccer

The Tigers opened the week with a 2-0 loss to Illinois on Thursday.

Mizzou outshot Illinois 9-6, including a 5-4 lead in shots on goal, but the Illini capitalized on opportunities with 46:55 on the clock and at the 59:06 mark.

Kate Phillips made two saves in net for the Tigers.

Emily Derucki had two shots on goal, Bella Carrillo had one and Keegan Good had the other.

Missouri rebounded with a 1-0 win against Kansas City on Sunday.

Mia Yang scored off a Derucki assist just 3:21 into the match for the long goal of the day.

The Tigers led 19-3 in total shots and 7-1 in shots on goal.

Phillips made one save to net the win in goal.

Yang led the team with three shots on goal.

Missouri (3-3-1) will start SEC play by hosting Texas at 7 p.m. Friday for the only match of the week.

Track & Field

Valentina Barrios qualified for the World Athletics Championship to represent Columbia in the javelin. The competition will be start Saturday and run through two Sundays from now.

Barios won the NCAA women’s javelin championship in the spring, then won the Pan American Games on Aug. 20.

The javelin qualifications will be Friday, Sept. 19. The finals will be the next day.
