The Week that Was in Mizzou sports: Sept. 15-21

It’s impossible to keep up with everything happening in Mizzou sports every day. So here is a rundown of what we didn’t cover last week, with links to what we did.
Volleyball
The Tigers played a Friday doubleheader, beating Valparaiso 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-16, then beating Chicago State 25-9, 25-8, 25-15.
Against Valparaiso, three Tigers recorded season highs, led by Regan Haith with a career-high 10 blocks.
Senior Janet deMarrais had a season high in kills with 20, while redshirt junior Marina Crownover posted 40 assists and 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. She also had five block assists.
Senior Maya Sands had 29 digs, one shy of her career high.
Against Chicago State, Crownover led the team with five aces, helping build a team total of 15.
Redshirt senior Tyrah Ariail had a career-high four aces to go with four kills. Freshman Paige Felder had a career high in kills and aces with eight and three, respectively.
Freshman Asia Harvy had seven kills and two blocks, while freshman Nina Mandovic had 17 assists.
It was the first time the Tigers have served 15 aces since Nov. 11, 2018 in a matchup with Georgia.
The Tigers then went to The Leatherneck Classic to play Western Illinois on Saturday. The Tigers won 26-24, 25-9, 25-11.
Mandovic earned her first career start and had 19 assists and four aces, while deMarrais had 10 kills to lead the Tigers.
Ariail and Haith both had three blocks, while Sands had 20 digs.
The Tigers will return to the court at 6 p.m. Wednesday to open SEC play at Texas A&M. Then the Tigers will play at Texas at 8 p.m. Friday.
Soccer
Mizzou opened the week with a 2-0 loss to No. 5 Tennessee on Thursday.
Kate Runyon scored both goals for Tennessee, first at the 43:53 mark, then again at 55:49.
Tennessee outshot Missouri 12-5 overall and 9-3 on goal. Kate Phillips had one save for the Tigers in net.
Missouri then lost 1-0 to Kentucky on Sunday.
Gabrielle Poretto had the goal for Kentucky. The Wildcats outshot Mizzou 14-5 overall and 5-2 on goal.
Phillips had four saves for the Tigers.
Missouri returns home to take on No. 12 Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Friday.
Men’s Golf
Mizzou went to the Canadian Collegiate Invitational from Sunday through Tuesday and placed third out of 11 teams.
Three Tigers finished in the top 20.
“It was another solid week for us,” Mizzou coach Glen Millican said. “There are some areas from today that we need to clean up but overall, good playing from the guys. It is a good start for us on this two-tournament trip and we’re ready to start our prep for Blessings.”
Junior Veikka Viskari led the Tigers again. He recorded a three-day total of 6 under at 67-70-73–210. It was the second consecutive tournament Viskari led the Tigers to open the season. He took 11th overall.
Junior Virgilio Paz was next for Mizzou at 5 under with a 71-69-71–211. He took 12th overall.
Sophomore Trent Mierl was the third Tiger in the top 20, shooting 70-73-73–216 for even par. That placed him 18th.
Freshman Reese Roberts shot 2 over at 73-70-75–218 for 24th overall, while junior Bradley Mulder took 36th at 77-69-76–222 for 6 over. Bubba Chapman finished 54th at 77-80-77–234 for 18 over.
The Tigers returned to action Monday at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Cross Country
Mizzou went to the Greeno Dirksen Cross Country Invite in Nebraska on Saturday.
The Tigers took second in the men’s 8,000-meter race with 49 team points. They trailed only Wichita State at 35 points. The Tigers had four runners finish in the top 10.
Elijah Limo led the Tigers in the men’s 8K with a time of 24:13.74. That placed him second overall, while Ryder James took fifth at 24:27.21. Austin Popplewell took eighth with a time of 24:37.20 and Raymond Kipkoech took ninth at 24:42.14.
Jamie Mora was fifth for the Tigers with a time of 26:21.47 for 28th overall.
The Tigers claimed the top team spot in the women’s 5,000-meter race with 76 points. The Tigers had two runners finish in the top 10, another in the top 15.
Charlotte Cullen led the way for Mizzou with a time of 17:51.43 to place third overall. Allison Newman took fifth overall with a time of 17:54.29.
Teegan Anderson was 15th overall and third for the tigers with a time of 18:19.76, while Elissa Barnard took 26th in 18:34.92. Maleah Eggers rounded out the Tigers’ scoring times with a 29th-place finish in 18:38.45.
Lily Ginsberg added a 38th-place finish in 18:55.56.
Mizzou will be back in action Friday hosting the Gans Creek Classic.

Football
Kenny opened the week with a look at how future Tigers did in their high school games, then he looked at three Mizzou targets in the Rivals300 update. He added a story about Mizzou’s staff reaching out to a former Virginia Tech commit.

I wrote about how Kirby Moore is helping the Tigers start fast, and Kenny wrote about Mizzou still boasting without a representative in the Rivals300. He added a story about Brett Norfleet continuing to impress recruits and I wrote about Beau Pribula blocking out the noise.
Kenny wrote about Mizzou joining the recruitment of a Michigan State pledge, then he wrote about the Tigers offering 2027 linebacker Kareem Palmer.
He added a story about Rivals300 tight end Jack Brown developing into an elite prospect, then I wrote about Pribula using visualization to fuel his success.
Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz gave an injury update on left tackle Cayden Green, you can find that story here.
Then Kenny wrote about recruit observations from a big visit weekend.

Men’s Basketball
I continued to look through the basketball schedule with a glance at Games 7 and 8.
Then Sunday, there was big news.
