The week that was in Mizzou Sports: Sept. 22-28

With so much focus on football, it’s easy to miss everything else going on around Mizzou sports. Here’s a look at all the stuff we didn’t cover last week.
Volleyball
The No. 21 Tigers opened the week with a 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 25-8 loss to No. 13 Texas A&M.
Caylen Alexander led the Tigers with 14 kills, while Nina Mandovic had a team-high 17 assists in her second start. Regan Haith had four blocks and Maya Sands added 20 digs.
The Tigers then faced No. 2 Texas and were swept 25-19, 26-24, 27-25.
Alexander led the Tigers with 17 kills, while Marina Crownover had 28 assists. Maca Lobaglio had a team-high five blocks, while Haith and Tyrah Ariail had four each. Sands had a team-high seven digs.
The Tigers will return to the court Friday hosting Arkansas.
Soccer
The Tigers hosted No. 15 Mississippi State on Friday and lost 3-0.
It was the Tigers’ third consecutive loss.
Mississippi State outshot Mizzou 13-7 overall and 7-2 on goal.
Kate Phillips had four saves in net for the Tigers.
Mizzou will return to the field Thursday when it hits the road to face LSU.
Women’s Golf
The Tigers hosted the Johnie Imes Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, taking first as a team at 14-under.
Missouri shot 275-287–562 across the two-day event. In second was Kentucky at 3-under.
Kentucky’s Cathryn Brown was the medalist at 7-under, but the Tigers had the next three finishers and four of the next five.
Melanie Walker took second overall at 68-70–138 for 6-under, while Ebba Liljeberg was third at 69-70–139 for 5-under.
Addie Dobson took fourth at 68-74–142 for 2-under, then Fleur van Beek tied for fifth at 70-73–143 for 1-under.
Addie Surber was the final Mizzou contributing score, finishing in a tie for eighth at 71-74–145 for 1-over.
Missouri also had a number of players compete independently.
Alexandra Berglund tied for 11th at 72-74–146 for 2-over, while Jade Zamora tied for 13th at 73-74–147 for 3-over. Aliya Liberatore tied for 27th with a 6-over 76-74–150, while Irene Garcia Sanchez tied for 61st at 13-over, shooting 81-76–157.
The Tigers are back in action right now at the Blessing Collegiate Invitational in Arkansas.
Cross Country
The Tigers hosted the Gans Creek Classic on Friday. The Mizzou men placed 12th and the women took eighth.
Monica Wanjiku took 11th to lead the Mizzou women in a time of 19:35.1 in the 6-kilometer race, while Suzy LeCoutre took 29th in 20 minutes flat.
Kobi Walker took 59th in 20:25.6, while Rahel Broemmel placed 70th in 20:31.6. Mirriam Chepkirui ran a time of 20:44.0, Natalie Barnard finished in 20:59.6, Charlotte Cullen ran a time of 21:08.5 and Allison Newman crossed the finish line in 21:18.0.
In the men’s race, Elijah Limo took 36th to lead the Tiger men with a time of 23:13.0 in the 8-kilometer race. Drew Rogers took 43rd in 23:18.9, while Tyler Freiner set a personal record with a time of 23:41.3 for 86th. Ryder James ran a time of 23:52.4 for 106th. Austin Popplewell ended in 24:06.6, Raymond Kipkoech finished in 24:23.8 and Joshua Allison ran a time of 24:50.7.
The Tigers will be back in action hosting the Pre-National Invitational at Gans Creek Cross Country Course on Oct. 18.
Tennis
The Tigers went to the Husker Invitational in Nebraska for a three-day event over the weekend.
Mizzou totaled 20 wins across the three days of round robin play.
The Tigers had nine wins on Day 1. Zoe Lazar and Gian Octa swept a doubles win against Kansas State, freshman Alex Ackman and sophomore Julie Bedard won a 7-6 (7-6) doubles match against Nebraska and Korina Roso partnered with Michelle Kleynerman to beat Iowa State 6-1.
Six Tigers won singles matches, with Octa and Ackman both winning, alongside freshman Jenna Kleynerman. Michelle Kleynerman, Roso and Lazar all won in three sets.
On Day 2, the Tigers added seven wins. Michelle Kleynerman and Roso won both doubles matches the Tigers claimed. While Mary Brumfield, Roso, Bedard and Jenna Kleynerman all won singles matches. Lazar won her singles match, coming back from a 0-1 set deficit for a 2-1 win.
On Day 3, Mizzou won 4-of-5 singles matches.
Lazar and Andrea Artimedi each won in one set, while Roso and Octa each won in three sets.
The Tigers will be back in action from Oct. 16-20 when the Tigers go to the ITA Fall Regional Championship in Norman, Oklahoma.
Softball
The Tigers started the fall ball season by hosting Missouri State on Friday. No stats were recorded.
The fall ball season continues as the Tigers host the Border War at 1 p.m. Saturday if you’re looking for something to do around town as the football team is on a bye.
