WINTERVILLE– The final game of the regular season usually involves conference rivals, and this Friday night was no exception. In a crosstown showdown, D.H. Conley defeated J.H. Rose 42–28. Conley used a late score in the first half to spark a second-half surge and secure the victory.
Both teams put together time-consuming touchdown drives in the first quarter, with Rose taking an early 7–6 lead. Late in the second quarter, Samari Cabell ran the ball in from 13 yards out — one of his three rushing touchdowns on the night — to give the Vikings a 14–7 advantage. The Rampants were then forced to punt the ball back to Conley at the Vikings’ 20-yard line with 40 seconds remaining in the half.
After a quick completion, a 14-yard run by Cabell, and a pass interference call on Rose, the Vikings had the ball on the Rampants’ 45-yard line with 12 seconds left. With Rose playing shallow coverage and minimal safety support, Cabell scrambled and found Shammah Cabell, who slipped past his defender for a 45-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds to go before halftime. Conley carried a 22–7 lead into the break.
Rose opened the third quarter with a strong kickoff return to midfield and quickly drove to the Vikings’ 15-yard line. However, on fourth-and-three, Conley intercepted a pass and returned it to their own 40. The Vikings then powered down the field, capping the drive with another Samari Cabell touchdown run to make it 28–7.
On the very next play after the kickoff, Rampants quarterback Jimmy Martin connected with Jaleek Parson for a 75-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit. But Rose could never get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Samari Cabell had a standout night for Conley, rushing for 137 yards and three touchdowns while also passing for 137 yards and two scores. Elijah Taft added 106 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Shammah Cabell contributed 87 receiving yards and a touchdown.
For Rose, Jimmy Martin threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Jaleek Parson tallied 149 receiving yards and two scores, and Nysean Davis added 87 rushing yards in the loss.
