The second pour

On today’s follow-up episode of Cup of Joe, we take a closer look at Texas Tech football’s latest recruiting momentum, break down what to watch for at Big 12 Media Days, and talk hoops — is Christian Anderson Jr. the next great Red Raider point guard? I’m also diving into the debate on uniform patch ads, dropping some fresh TV and movie picks, and covering everything else happening across Texas Tech athletics right now.

Did your first cup leave you wanting more? This second pour is hotter, bolder, and packed with everything Red Raider fans need to know. Let’s get into it.

Top safety in Texas is headed to Lubbock

The streak stays alive — elite Texas talent is staying in-state, and Texas Tech just landed a big one.

Frisco (TX) Panther Creek four-star safety Donovan Webb has officially committed to the Red Raiders, choosing Tech over the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame… and Kansas State (who keep showing up at the table like they’re a blue blood — cute effort, though).

Through his sophomore season, Webb racked up 114 tackles, 4 interceptions, 10 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and returned two picks for touchdowns — enough to earn Co-Defensive MVP honors in Texas 7‑4A Division I. The kid can hit, cover, and take it to the house.

This marks the 16th commitment for Texas Tech’s loaded 2026 class and another huge win for safeties coach Rob Greene, who’s been on a tear — already reeling in Maddox Quiller and Aaron Bradshaw in just six months on the job.

Webb brings physicality, instincts, and that signature Texas edge to Lubbock — and make no mistake, this is another warning shot fired at the rest of the Big 12.

Point Guard? Yeah, That box is checked

For all the talk about Texas Tech needing a true floor general, Christian Anderson Jr. is stepping up and making a loud case: PG1 might already be in the building.

If you’ve caught any of the U19 World Cup action, you know what I’m talking about. Anderson has been balling out for Team Germany. Through the first three games, he’s averaging 14.5 points, 6.8 assists, and 4 rebounds per game — and currently leads the entire tournament in assists. Oh, and he dropped 29 points, 6 dimes, and 6 boards on Canada in one of the best individual performances of the event so far.

Names like Ben Henshall and Jaylen Petty are still in the mix, and sure — Tech might add another piece. But with the way Anderson is playing? He’s making it really tough for the staff to justify adding another lead guard.

At this point, Christian Anderson Jr. isn’t just holding his own — he’s owning the moment. And if he keeps this up, it won’t be a question of if he’s Tech’s point guard… it’ll be how far he can take them.

All eyes on Frisco: What Big 12 media days mean for Texas Tech

Big 12 Football Media Days are almost here, and all eyes are on Texas Tech as the Joey McGuire era enters its most anticipated chapter yet. After another strong offseason in the portal, the Red Raiders are rolling into Frisco with serious momentum — and a group of six players ready to represent the program on one of the biggest stages of the summer.

Making the trip: QB1 Behren Morton, linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, defensive lineman Lee Hunter, wide receiver Caleb Douglas, safety Cole Wisniewski, and edge rusher Romello Height. That’s a solid blend of veteran leadership, portal firepower, and future NFL potential.

With several new coaches in the league and rosters flipped upside down, this year’s media days could be the most chaotic — and telling — in recent memory. And RedRaiderSports will be on the ground in Frisco with full coverage, real-time reactions, and everything you won’t get from the podium clips.

Big 12 football talk is about to take over. What are you most fired up to hear next week?

Ads on Jerseys—Are We Really Doing This?

I’ve had a gut feeling this day was coming. Jersey patch ads in college sports? Yeah, it feels wrong — but welcome to the new age of college athletics, where tradition gets tossed the second a check clears.

It started with logos on the field, then crept into arenas, and now it’s aiming straight for the uniforms. LSU looks ready to be the first to slap a corporate patch on their jersey, and let’s be honest — if the NCAA doesn’t step in (which they won’t, unless uniforms start looking like a minor league baseball outfield fence), this thing’s happening.

So, here we are. Uniforms used to mean something. Now they’re one sponsorship away from looking like a walking billboard. If Tech’s next… who should get the first patch? Better make it count.

Great Watches Incoming — Here’s What’s Coming Soon!

If you haven’t seen the trailers for America’s Team, Project Hail Mary, or Roofman yet… what are you even doing?

America’s Team is bringing the college football heat — drama, controversy, and probably some online arguments. Project Hail Mary looks like a wild ride through space with real stakes and real heart (plus, it’s from the guy who gave us The Martian). And Roofman? It’s giving chaotic genius energy — weird in all the right ways.

All three are shaping up to be must-watch. So hit play, then tell me: which one’s got your attention?

NIL didn’t just change college sports — it turned athletes into influencers with highlight reels and brand deals before they even hit the draft. And that’s something to sip on.

Thanks for pouring up another cup of Joe with me! I’ll be back next week — live from Big 12 Media Days — with more Texas Tech insight, hot takes, and can’t-miss storylines. Until then, stay safe and enjoy your Fourth of July weekend. Wreck ’Em!
