News / Notes from the Press Conference

  • Coach Schiano spoke about recently reclassified four-star edge rusher Wydeek Collier and noted that he is not on campus yet, but will be soon. He also spoke about the other two reclassifed prospects in defensive backs Cannon Marshall and Latrell Noel, as the program brought in three formerly 2026 kids over the past month.

“Wydeek (Collier) is a fine player and one that we’re really excited about. All three of those guys are very promising prospects. It is great to get them in our program, training with us, eating with us, learning football and learning our culture. We are very excited about all three of those guys.”

  • Rutgers Football added five significant contributors to the defensive line via the Transfer Portal this offseason in edge rushers Eric O’Neill, Bradley Weaver along with defensive tackles Doug Blue-Eli, Darold DeNgohe, and Oliver Billotte. Coach touched on the unit as a whole and said they have the pieces, but now have to figure out who will get what reps.
  • This offseason, Rutgers Football made a significant change in the strength and conditioning room, as long time coach Jay Butler was replaced by Spencer Brown, who joined the team this spring via Dartmouth.

“One of the things that I believe is that you have to hire great people and let them do their job,” said Schiano. “You give them direction and give them a vision, but you have to let them do what they believe is best, that’s why you hired them. I listen to them, and unless I’m vehemently opposed, I usually let people lead their area of expertise. He’s made some changes already and he’s talked to me about other things he’d like to change too and I’m all for it.”

  • Schiano went on to talk about the linebackers room and noted that Dariel Djabome and Moses Walker are the first two guys out there. However after that, it gets a little bit “foggy”.

“Well, I don’t know if it’s in flux at the first two, right? Like the first two, I feel very good about Moses and DJ,” said coach. “They’ve had really good spring and summer. They’ve been great with their preparation and their physical makeup. So I’m excited. After that, it gets a little bit foggy. You’re right, because Abe’s coming back from the surgery. And then we have some young guys that are all competing for playing time.We have Austin Dean comes back, and he’s thrown into the mix. So it’s gonna be interesting, but I think that’s what this training camp is for. Let’s find out who are the guys, who’s the third best, who’s the fourth best, and then get them ready.”
