Rutgers Football WR DT Sheffield Named to Paul Hornung Trophy Watch List

Rutgers Football wide receiver DT Sheffield was one of 48 players named to the 2025 Paul Hornung Award Preseason Watch List on Thursday afternoon.
The award is named after the 1956 Heisman Trophy winner and College Football / Pro Football Hall of Fame running back and kicker Paul Hornung and is presented annually to the nation’s most versatile player in college football each season since 2010.

Sheffield joined the Scarlet Knights roster this offseason following a very strong year with North Texas, where he exploded for 66 receptions for 822 receiving yards and a team-high 11 touchdowns. He also ran the ball four times for 86 yards and a touchdown, along with being a return man for the Mean Green, where he returned 13 kicks for 157 yards (12.1 AVG) and six punt returns for 127 yards (21.7 AVG). Those numbers were good enough to earn him All-AAC First Team honors, as well as an Honorable Mention All-American selection by College Football Network.
Previous Rutgers Football players that have made the preseason watch list include wide receiver / return specialist Aron Cruickshank (2021, 2022), wide receiver / return specialist Janarion Grant (2019), and running back Raheem Blackshear (2019).
Sheffield also joins defensive end Eric O’Neill (Lott Impact Trophy), as the only other Scarlet Knight to be selected to a preseason watch list so far.
