Rutgers Football linebacker Sam Pilof took to social media early Thursday morning to announce that he has medically retired from football.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker was set to enter his second year with the Scarlet Knights this upcoming season, but unfortunately he was never able to remain healthy.

Pilof will remain with the football program and stay at Rutgers University, while earning his degree per a source. He plans to help out with the team in the weight room, as he looks to pursue a career in strength and conditioning.

As a recruit, Pilof was considered one of the best prospects to come out of the state of Wisconsin, finishing ranked No. 15 overall in the state for the 2024 recruiting class per the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also ranked the No. 136 overall linebacker in the country for the 2024 cycle.

In the end, Pilof was considered a solid commit for the Scarlet Knights as he chose them over three other offers from the likes of Iowa State, Penn State and Wisconsin.

“Pilof is a long linebacker that can stretch plays from sideline to sideline. He’s also pretty physical on the field and doesn’t shy away from contact, in fact he does the exact opposite, hawking down opposing players whenever they have the ball in their hands. Now he will need to add some muscle before contributing, but he has a chance to be a very good Big Ten linebacker when it’s all said and done.” – TKR Publisher Richie O’Leary

With Pilof no longer a part of the program, that leaves the Scarlet Knights with 10 scholarship linebackers heading into the 2025 season, seven of which are considered either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen per the unofficial Rutgers Football Eligibility Chart.
