Rutgers Women’s Basketball has gone north of the border to kick off its 2026 recruiting class. Canadian wing Chante Murray committed to the Scarlet Knights on Friday.

Murray is a native of Mississauga, Ontario, and will become the first Canadian native to suit up for Rutgers since Mael Gilles suited up in Piscataway from 2017-21.

Murray’s background

The 6-foot-1 wing is playing her senior campaign at Crestwood Prep in Toronto, one of the country’s top girls’ basketball programs, led by renowned coach Marlo Davis. She transferred in after a year at St. Jude’s Academy in Mississauga.

Murray also suited up for Team Canada in the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s Americup, as part of a silver medal-winning squad. She played in four games, averaging 1.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and an assist per game. Davis also coached that team.

In June’s Basketball Without Borders Americas Camp, Murray was also named an All-Star, as part of the camp that sees competing high school prospects from Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

On the AAU circuit, Murray plays for Kia Nurse Elite, the lone Jordan-sponsored Nike EYBL program in Canada. She ranks fourth in Canada’s 2026 class for North Pole Hoops, behind three other high-major commits (Savvy SwordsKentucky, Jordyn WheelerStanford, Yohana Fami – Pittsburgh).

What does she bring to Rutgers?

Murray’s commitment continues a trend in head coach Coquese Washington’s recruiting strategy, emphasizing length, athleticism, and versatility in her program’s wings. Washington has expressed a desire for that skillset plenty of times in recent years, especially with players such as Antonia Bates and Zachara Perkins currently on the roster filling that mold.

At 6-foot-1, Murray brings a strong two-way game as a plus athlete, with plenty of high-level experience on the national stage, and in her current senior year at Crestwood.

It remains to be seen how the newest commitment – and first of the 2026 class – will affect the momentum of the rest of the class, as the Scarlet Knights have only brought in two freshmen in each of the last two classes. PreciousGem Wheeler was the program’s lone commitment in 2025 until June, when Makylah Moore joined the class late in the cycle.

A well-regarded addition like Murray, however, could spur up some more recruiting momentum for Washington and the new revamped coaching staff, as the program has sent out several offers for the 2026 and 2027 classes.

Scout’s take

“A prototypical wing with length and athleticism, Chante Murray has been attracting major Division I attention. At 6’1, she’s smooth off the bounce, defends at a high level, and shows the potential to become an elite two-way guard/forward. Her versatility and upside make her one of the most intriguing prospects in this group.”
