Clemson has lost another key piece to the puzzle for this recruiting class.

College Park (Ga.) Woodward Academy safety Blake Stewart told Rivals expert Hayes Fawcett on Monday that he has decommitted from the Tigers.

Stewart (6-1, 185) was rated a three-star by the network. But that arguably wasn’t indicative of his stature within the class, as he has been considered one of its top talents.

He picked Clemson over Michigan, Miami and Vanderbilt during the summer.

Tigerillustrated.com informed subscribers last month that Miami in particular had not given up on Stewart, while Georgia had also attempted to keep a line of communication open.

Stewart reaffirmed the strength of his commitment at the time.

But the circumstances of Clemson’s season have continued to descend, playing a hand in his decision to reopen the recruitment.

Stewart visited Vanderbilt over the weekend for its victory against Missouri, and the dominoes fell from there. He had quietly gone to a Miami game earlier this month as well.

Stewart was one of three safety commitments in the class, joined by Roebuck (S.C.) Dorman four-star Kentavion Anderson and Olentangy (Ohio) Lewis Center’s Kaden Gebhardt.

His coverage ability profiled him as a potential nickel candidate, which differentiated him from the other two — and enhanced his value, as Clemson has struggled to find a fit for that position within its roster this season.

We have reported that Clemson’s staff has kept eyes out for additional safeties within this high school class.

Furthermore, defensive coordinator Tom Allen gave strong indication last week that the Tigers would likely be looking to the transfer portal this offseason to address needs for coverage ability and speed on the back end.
